Mini-Review: This is a truly breathtaking film, and only the second 100 I have in almost 500 ratings. The triumph of Entre... is that, in the end, this is neither a film about school nor teaching nor learning. This is a film about the interactions of disparate groups in singular situations. The performances are varied and remarkable, the dialogue is the most natural I have ever listened to, and the cinematography dissolves away, leaving the viewer literally "entre les murs." Nothing short of a masterpiece.
Mini-Review: Nothing short of a visual triumph. The animation inside of OZ is completely breathtaking. The family is varied, entertaining and likable. Comparisons to Miyazaki are too soon - lacking is the emphatic/emotional, nuanced, and -challenging- moral, social and emotional issues posed even by Miyazaki's earlier work. As an enjoyable ride - Summer Wars is a smashing success. The commentary is there (digital vs real lives), but I found it heavy-handed and secondary to fairly run-of-the-mill devices.
Mini-Review: I'm disconcerted when a new film engages me as one of the all-time greats. Un prophète deserves every bit. Audiard crafted a film not only visceral, emotional and challenging, but entertaining (in the broadest sense; I am entertained by all good film). Malik is a stunning character put forth by a stunning performance, a character that simultaneously disgusts with despicable malice and inspires with bravery, perseverance and vulnerability. I felt for Malik, and confusingly so. Required viewing.
Mini-Review: A magnificent, beautiful work. Seems most reviews on Criticker bump it down for being lighthearted (I doubt out of a negativity, but a sense of less importance). I can't agree. Kiki is nothing short of a tremendous, uplifiting film which contains no evil, but only the hardships and misgivings of good. I don't see this as a film to teach adults but one to inspire. For children, it is essential. PLEASE AVOID the Disney dubbing - most Ghibli dubs are good, but the English voicing is awful in Kiki!
