16 Camp (2003) - Sep 08, 2010
Mini-Review: This film is one giant unapologetic cliché. It hopes the audience will forgive this fact simply because it's fun. Well this audience member ain't biting. The plot does nothing unique; it just flails around every few minutes. The characters are entirely 1-dimensional and their problems remind me of my year in 4th grade. What saves this from being the worst film I've ever seen isn't just Anna Kendrick being fantastic, but a little depth added to the ending. Too little too late.
41 Wet Hot American Summer (2001) - Aug 20, 2010
Mini-Review: This movie can be so funny sometimes. And it has Bradley Cooper sans shirt. All of that good stuff is in the first half of the movie when it took itself seriously. Then a completely new film comes out halfway through where pure crazy exists and parody fills the void. This new film isn't fun, it's not funny, has no heart and is painful to watch. This movie only scores in the forties because the first half is everything the second isn't. There's a line between silly and stupid that was crossed.
65 The Land Before Time (1988) - Aug 09, 2010
Mini-Review: Be ready for 65 minutes of high cuteness level. The characters are loads of fun, and their problems are real and interesting. The biggest knock against the film is the awful action sequences. There are too many of them, they're hard to follow and they take away from the more interesting parts of the story. Little Foot also loses his mother, and his grieving process is never concluded well. The transition from emo to friendly felt jagged. But it is a fun, if very short, film.
44 The Sorcerer's Apprentice (2010) - Aug 06, 2010
Mini-Review: This isn't a terrible film. It's completely watchable, with strong direction and incredible action sequences that flow well with the pace of a movie. But why have characters in this action when I don't care about these characters? They're all entirely 2-dimentional cutouts from a number of similar films. The entire concept of "the chosen one" has been worn out and this film does NOTHING new. A good game would be to hang out with film fans and drink every time you spot a cliche.
91 Edward Scissorhands (1990) - Aug 06, 2010
62 Dare (2009) - Jul 13, 2010
Mini-Review: With a coming-of-age story that takes a near cliche and makes it unique and authentic writing, it's hard for me not to really like Dare. But the fact that the mediocre Johnny's acting is the best we get is really upsetting. At least the dialogue was fantastically written and the camera work helped you dive into the characters' world, never being obtrusive. The second half was generally odd, and the movie is good because of its story. Overall good, with potential and I hope to revisit it someday.
72 Good Hair (2009) - Jul 07, 2010
Mini-Review: This documentary does what few dare to do, it answers many of the questions it asks at the end. I was turned off by a particularly Moore like move where Rock tried to prove a point by selling black hair. And the film did loose some of it's shape thanks to an odd trip to a hair showdown, it was integrated well enough that I was prepared. The holistic film includes great opinions from black communities as well. The entire plot was so informative fresh and fun that I can't help but love it.
77 The September Issue (2009) - Jul 07, 2010
Mini-Review: I've slowly come to realize two things about documentaries. One, they're just like all other films in that their mission is simply to tell a story. Secondly for it to be interesting and informative / thought provoking it must be holistic. Fortunately this documentary is that and so much more. Besides being wonderfully entertaining, it gets quite personal into the mind of an intriguing icon and what it's like to work with and around such a commanding and controlling figure. Simply Fabulous!
92 Ghostbusters (1984) - Jul 01, 2010
82 Shakespeare in Love (1998) - Jul 01, 2010
