| 61 T4 | Jackass: Number Two (2006) - May 21, 2013
"Although I do enjoy Jackass the second instalment really isn't the best - I feel it lacks some of the energy and camaraderie of the other Jackass material. It's much more extreme and very mean spirited - I felt sorry for some of the people in these sketches in a way that didn't really feel the same as before - the best parts of Jackass was people willingly putting themselves in harm's way, here much of it feels forced. "

| 85 T8 | GoldenEye (1995) - May 21, 2013
"My favourite Bond film by a country mile - it feels very much like a Bond film created out of memories of other Bond films. It has great pacing, almost everything is an action sequence or a one-liner, Brosnan pulls off Bond here very well (and the supporting cast are big, fun and camp) and the film's constant jumping between locations keeps it fresh. The score is horrendous, but for me that just makes it better - it's determined in making Bond relevant to the 1990s and it worked!"

| 19 T1 | Chasing Amy (1997) - May 21, 2013
"Sometimes I can forgive Kevin Smith for not developing much past his debut effort Clerks but I really don't understand the appeal here. Smith takes what is a talented cast and directs them in such a way that they all sound like the same person. Good on him for creating a story which doesn't end up marginalising LGBT issues, but at the same time it's hard to watch a film where you can't sympathise with any of the protagonist's weird hangups - especially when aside from said hangups, he's boring."

| 76 T7 | Jackass: The Movie (2002) - May 21, 2013
"Everyone involved in the Jackass franchise understands the stupidity behind their actions and behind their success, and this is why it's so much fun. You know it, and they know it: whatever is happening on screen is likely the dumbest thing you're ever going to see (until the next sketch) and the first Jackass movie nails it. It has good pacing, nothing goes on for too long, and the lack of TV censorship allows them to go crazy but it never feels forced. Just solid good fun!"

| 64 T5 | The Great Gatsby (2013) - May 18, 2013
"A visual feast, DiCaprio is excellent, and the pacing is pretty good - but several plot elements from the book are brought up then dropped, because iconic scenes *have* to happen in the film, right? Luhrmann nails the tragic romance, but removes the moral ambiguity. The soundtrack is good, but it doesn't go far enough - all of it could have been modern. Tobey Maguire is utter pish though. His performance brings this down from a solid 8 to a 6."

| 64 T5 | Los amantes pasajeros (2013) - May 18, 2013
"My first Almodóvar, I understood going in it was going to be a very light comedy - and I suppose it didn't disappoint on that front. It IS very very light - there's lots of smart and funny dialogue, but none of it is really laugh out loud. It's quite camp, and there's a great sense of fun throughout, but it all feels a little shallow. I also found it rather similar to the Foo Fighter's Learn to Fly video, which is unfortunately funnier on first watch. Brilliant colour palette."
|
| 60 T4 | Clerks (1994) - May 18, 2013
"I used to love this movie when I was maybe 14. It had witty dialogue, a good helping of crude humour, and the DIY aesthetic really appealed to me - anyone could make a good movie if they put the effort in! Looking back, the acting is shoddy, the romance feels forced, but at least Kevin Smith understood his characters were not supposed to be likeable. A damn shame that his later career never really kicked off - he spends every film after this trying to reinvent Clerks, to no avail. A fluke."
|
| 74 T7 | Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie (2012) - May 18, 2013
"I enjoy Tim & Eric's style of comedy - surreal, hyperpaced and a little bit off-putting, and the movie is more of the same, with a somewhat coherent plot too. It drags a little towards the end but what I like here is that they push the normal length of their gags out - the repetition becomes a little ridiculous and the movie is funnier because of it. The lack of censorship isn't the best though - although I thought SHRIM was hilarious the entire project could have done with a little restraint. "
|
| 66 T5 | Small Soldiers (1998) - May 13, 2013
"I loved this as a kid and I think it's actually held up quite well. It's very cynical - it seems Joe Dante wanted to take on the big corporate enemy, much as it is in the Terminator films, but instead subverts it by essentially arguing that consumerism is an unstoppable force - and that essentially everyone can be paid off. Between this there is a fairly stock plot about young kids fighting a big bad, etc - which is serviceable. But it's really about the dark humour, and great cast."
|
| 67 T5 | Haywire (2012) - May 13, 2013
"Fantastic action sequences let down by a overly convoluted plot - which takes the front seat in the third act and subjects us to a lot of exposition, slowing the whole film down. Gina Carano is largely helped up by a good supporting cast, and several of the action sequences are great - with a good score reminiscent of an old espionage thriller. The pacing is also really good - up until that dreadful third act where everything goes out the window to explain the plot. A missed opportunity."
