90 Seven Pounds (2008) - Jan 02, 2012
Mini-Review: The most original love story I have ever seen. Filled with remorse, Ben (Will Smith) , sets out on a journey to make amends with unexpected consequences. An intricate plot that brings the threads together as it progresses this film will make you think the preverbial 'what would I have done'. We all hold the gift of Ben not not necessarily the resolve.
78 Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows (2011) - Dec 26, 2011
Mini-Review: A period James Bond with action and humour. Great sets (some filmed in my local Knole Park). The plot gets complicated but comes together in the end. Great film to watch with the family
86 Hugo (2011) - Dec 26, 2011
Mini-Review: The film started slow and I was wondering where it was going when all the threads started coming together. Sacha Baron Cohen was mesmorising as the station security officer. His part was played in a restrained way that left you wanting more every time he was on the screen. The cinematography is first class. The 3D is used to terrific effect, particularly with the clock work mechanisms and the trains. I'm not going to try and explain the plot other than to say it draws you in and leaves you thin
75 True Grit (2010) - Jun 26, 2011
Mini-Review: I did enjoy this 'gritty' drama but goodness...its the only English speaking film I have had to use sub titles to understand the spoken word- Bridges accent is soooo thick. Another great Coen Bros film though
85 The Fighter (2010) - Jun 26, 2011
Mini-Review: Believable drama (based on truth to be fair). Christian Bale is superb and his study of a crack addict looks spot on. In any boxing drama there is winner and losers but it's how they get there that delivers the interest, and this has interst in spades!
78 Amélie (2001) - Dec 18, 2010
Mini-Review: Gentle, beautifully filmed, subtitled. Draws you in. If only everyone was as thoughtful as our heroine. I'll never look at a garden gnome the same (you will have to watch it now!)
78 Nativity! (2009) - Dec 18, 2010
Mini-Review: Yes I know its had bad reviews but how enjoyabe! Love the guy from the office (cant act) love the girl from Extras (good looking). You would have to be a sour faced person with no kids not to enjoy this bundle of joy. Who cares its corny, the kids are adorable and it leaves you with exactly the feeling you should have when watching a Christmas film - maybe I'm not so tough as I thought! Essential Christmas viewing.
73 It's a Wonderful Life (1946) - Dec 18, 2010
Mini-Review: What goes around comes around exemplified. Despite the god like reverence this film attracts it is, to be honest, half an hour too long. Anyone noticed how loud they talked in these films! If I came home and shouted like that I'd soon get be told! Should be shown to anyone with doubts as to their worth - a classic (or as they would say..A CLASSIC!)
75 Law Abiding Citizen (2009) - May 10, 2010
Mini-Review: A story of revenge. I know the Conservative manifesto proposed more rights to self defence for the householder but this is ridiculous! The story keeps you engaged though much if it is unbelievable. Some horrific scenes, one in particluar not leaving much to the imagination. Perhaps truth and justice should be left to Batman where it is allowed to be unbelievable! Worth watching but the unlikely story let it down.
88 Inglourious Basterds (2009) - Apr 24, 2010
Mini-Review: Up there with Pulp Fiction as one of my favourite QT films. Numerous scenes present an inpalpable tension only to be released in a frenzy of violence. It holds no punches in the violence department but somehow it seems almost necessary and without it the reality would be lost. Col. Landa (Christoph Waltz) deserved his Oscar without doubt - some of the finest acting ever. Despite his cruelty you cant help but look forward to his scenes. The music is first class. A film you could watch over and ov
