90 Mystic River (2003) - Dec 23, 2007
Mini-Review: One of Clint Eastwood's most shining moments as a director. Powerfully acted, beautifully written and shot, this film about three old buddies and the tragic trajectory of their lives hits home on several levels. Wait for the end of the film. This one will haunt even after the theatre curtains have fallen.
75 Alpha Dog (2007) - Dec 12, 2007
Mini-Review: Justin Timberlake gives a surprisingly nuanced performance in this flick about a bunch of lazy, juvenile delinquents and a kidnapping plot gone terribly wrong. Although the editing is haphazard and Emile Hirsch is slightly miscast (should have switched him and Hatosy's parts), but Cassavetes is able to pull it together enough to make a very effective climactic scene. Not the best film of the year, but certainly enough to prove Timberlake to be more than just another pop star.
65 The Village (2004) - Nov 30, 2007
Mini-Review: M. Night Shyamylan said in an interview that the inclusion of the love story in "The Village" was an afterthought. Well, it was an insightful afterthought. Placing Phoenix alongside newcomer Brice Dallas Howard gives this flick its heart. Without the love story, the film is merely atmosphere with thinly developed characters.
75 Pleasantville (1998) - Nov 30, 2007
Mini-Review: Tobey Mcguire and Reese Witherspoon make decent impressions in this flick, filmed in a most interesting manner. The special effects are stellar and when splashes of color begin to break up the black and white pallette, the impact is noticeable. The story, however, goes from being rather interesting to merely cliche at when the credits role.
20 Charlie's Angels (2000) - Nov 30, 2007
Mini-Review: It doesn't get worse than 3 pretty girls with questionable acting skills placed in a film whose only requirement of them is to look good in a bathing-suit. The film just never could put its pieces together in regards to plot and where to put its pretty centerpieces. Worst of all, the jokes fall flatter than Lucy Liu's character's muffins.
85 A Beautiful Mind (2001) - Nov 30, 2007
Mini-Review: Although the plot of this film takes some liberties, overall it is powerfully acted, adequately directed, and well-written. It was deserving of the Oscar.
95 Forrest Gump (1994) - Nov 30, 2007
Mini-Review: Just a wonderful, touching movie all around. Although the storyline at times is rather implausible, the acting is first rate and keeps the movie soaring throughout. Certainly one of the best films ever made.
70 Primal Fear (1996) - Nov 30, 2007
Mini-Review: Richard Gere delivers the same performance he's been giving since "An Officer and a Gentleman", but does a serviceable job as the attorney assigned to defend Norton's character in this suspense flick. This film is worthy of praise mainly due to Edward Norton's award nominated performance as the tortured soul at the heart of the film. It was Norton's first mainstream, headlining role, but it certainly hinted at things to come.
90 Black Hawk Down (2001) - Nov 30, 2007
Mini-Review: Based on a true story, this film tells the tale of soldiers fighting to stay alive after a plan gone terribly wrong. The only character truly "visible" in this film belongs to Josh Hartnett who gives perspective in the heat of battle. It's a tear jerker, emotionally draining, and moves at such a pace that it brings the audience to the battle. But what it does most of all is tell a story that needs to be told, about how the worst in mankind can sometimes bring out the best in men.
50 The Truth About Cats & Dogs (1996) - Nov 30, 2007
Mini-Review: To the end of time, I'll never understand why Janine Garafalo is supposed the be the ugly duckling in this film. She's cute, she's funny, what's not to like? On the other hand, Uma Thurman's character is supposed to be gorgeous and every single synonym for the word fabulous. So why is it that only Garafalo gives light to this film? A nice chick flick overall, but sort of weighed down too many cliche's.
