70 Righteous Kill (2008) - Oct 08, 2008
Mini-Review: I had heard really bad things about this movie, but all in all I enjoyed it. If you go in just wanting a extended version of the scene between DeNiro and Pacino in Heat, it delivers. I do hope these two reunite in a better project down the road though, before they retire.
90 Spartan (2004) - Sep 24, 2008
Mini-Review: I like this movie way more than I should. The dialogue is Mamet all the way through, but it does seem odd and unrealistic at times. Still though, the concept that the film's title is derived from, the subject matter, and the haunting score all combine to give me just what I want in an intelligent thriller. Plus, I do love me some Val Kilmer. Macy seems comically underused though. A nicely shot movie that Probably scoring it way higher than it deserves, but it captures my imagination in a big way
87 Following (1998) - Aug 19, 2008
Mini-Review: Very clever film that does not seem like its budget at all. I almost wish I had seen this before Memento, but while they share similar storytelling, they are completely different. Echoing what others have said: This does not seem like a director's first movie since there is a maturity in the film making that makes that very hard to believe. Some (coincidental?) foreshadowing with the Batman decal on the door. Watch this movie to see the evolution of Nolan, but also just because it is great.
83 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) - Aug 19, 2008
Mini-Review: Honestly? Well, it's hard to not be biased here. This is one of those films that makes you feel like a kid again. I thought this installment was as good as Temple of Doom, in fact, I think it's a little better than TOD because Shortround annoyed the hell out of me. All the little references were great: the Ark, snakes, monkeys, swords, and bugs. I enjoyed how they showed Indy not quite as with it as he used to be. Many people were turned off by Shia, but acts completely differently in this film.
60 21 (2008) - Aug 17, 2008
Mini-Review: Stylishly shot, but way too formulaic and predictable. Kevin Spacey is brilliant as always even if the movie as a whole seems empty and devoid of feeling. I will say that it does capture the dream of becoming a Las Vegas high roller, and all that comes with it.
85 Juno (2007) - Aug 17, 2008
75 Hellboy II: The Golden Army (2008) - Aug 15, 2008
Mini-Review: One of the most visually entertaining and imaginative movies I've seen recently. Ron Perlman is still pitch perfect as the titular hero, and the rest of the cast do a good job. Whoever choreographed the Prince's fights did a great job, I never really thought of elves as bad ass until I saw this. Del Toro keeps giving us highly creative and visually inspired films. I have been a fan of his ever since Blade 2, and am excited to see what he has in store for us in the future.
70 The Mist (2007) - Aug 12, 2008
Mini-Review: This movie is worth it for the ending alone.
80 The Incredible Hulk (2008) - Aug 12, 2008
Mini-Review: A solid reboot of the Hulk franchise. Yes, it is a fairly mindless affair, but it is one that is done very well. I like how they went straight to the story and did without an origin, how it was more of a chase movie than a superhero movie, and how well it was paced. Edward Norton is very competent, William Hurt is excellent, and Tim Roth is awesomely menacing. The last 20 minutes of the movie are what we've always wanted in a Hulk film. Great cameo and continuing (see Iron Man) setup at the end.
