86 The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) - Nov 20, 2010
Mini-Review: A great work of collaboration between Tim Burton%u2019s concept and characters, the lyrics and music of Danny Elfman, and the hard work and dedication of hundreds of artists, all held together and made better by the creative glue of Henry Selick%u2019s direction.
80 Sherlock Holmes (2009) - Nov 15, 2010
Mini-Review: A delightful re-imagining of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's character. I think that RDJ was perfectly cast in this role. It was weakened with a poor plot, I hardly even remember the villain or the conflict. But if a sequel is made, much could be done with Holmes' super villain Moriarty. Good action that we would expect from Guy Ritchie, and great quickly-delivered dialogue from RDJ and the equally good, Jude Law. If you're looking for a perfect interpretation of the books, you will be disappointed.
68 The Book of Eli (2010) - Nov 15, 2010
Mini-Review: Based upon the book that the title of the movie is referring to, I thought I would like this film better. I would have loved to see this film in a less apocalyptic setting and more in the real world where we are more likely to have the actual text of the "book" and lack an understanding of what it says and how it should affect the way we live. It reminded me of Fahrenheit 451. It is less about the Book and more about Eli. But if it is so important, shouldn't they say more about why?
79 Kick-Ass (2010) - Nov 15, 2010
Mini-Review: Good old comic books. Now we can safely snuggle up in our beds, safe in our delusional alternate reality, convinced that the real world can't hurt us. That's why I think this movie is so smart. It reminds you that what you want isn't realism. You want the fantasy. You see, Kick-Ass isn't a comic-book satire. It is satirizing the audience and their desire for reality. Their desire for violence. And it does a great job of doing just that.
74 An Education (2009) - Nov 15, 2010
Mini-Review: Being a person who has looked for shortcuts my whole life, I saw the ending of this after-school special coming a mile away. There are no shortcuts to the life that we dream of. Mulligan was brilliant. Her charm and beauty will serve her well in the industry, but her acting chops will make her a star. Perhaps the saddest truth is that she received more of an education from a few months with her charming playboy than all her prior years of schooling could have afforded her.
91 V for Vendetta (2006) - Nov 15, 2010
Mini-Review: Never read the graphic novel, but I didn't need to. It was poetic and powerful. A futuristic ode to democracy. With Hugo Weaving's mellifluous voice behind that Guy Fawkes mask it is powerful. Another great achievement in the portfolio of the Wachowski brothers.
52 Sideways (2004) - Nov 15, 2010
Mini-Review: I was really disappointed with this film. I had heard good reviews, and I usually love Paul Giamatti, but it was a self-absorbed narcissistic bore. Both of the actors did a fabulous job of portraying a pitiful, self-absorbed, destructive, depressed alcoholic and a moronic, has-been, shallow, womanizer. I couldn't cheer for them or feel sorry for them, I could only think that they deserved all the loneliness that they felt in their lives.
80 Brothers (2009) - Nov 15, 2010
Mini-Review: This movie was a heart-wrenching drama about the reality and the repercussions of war, but the trailer made it out to be a horror version of Pearl Harbor. It doesn't seek to judge the war, only show that man was not meant to kill man for any reason, and there are always consequences. It is the story of a man who lost himself in war and his struggle to live with himself and his family at home again. Tobey Maguire and Jake Gyllenhaal were great, but 10-year-old Bailee Madison stole the show.
78 The Pursuit of Happyness (2006) - Nov 15, 2010
Mini-Review: As a father this film particularly touched me. I can imagine what I might do in similar circumstances. Having no money, would I steal food to feed my children? Would I sleep in a dirty public restroom to keep them out of the rain? It is an inspiring story of how determination and hard-work can make all the difference. Notice I said can, because there are thousands for which it doesn't go this well. They may work-hard and do the right things and still struggle and never obtain their dreams.
84 Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991) - Nov 15, 2010
Mini-Review: One of the few sequels that far outshines its predecessor. The effects and story are good. This brings me back to my youth. Guns 'n' Roses blaring on the soundtrack, stuff blowing up, all the Governator's cliches. It's a blockbuster for my generation. I gave it a lower score because there is nothing really good about it. It's about machines protecting humans from other machines. But it is a fun movie to watch with a big bowl of popcorn.
