Mini-Review: Watched this film as per Guillermo del Toro's Hitchcock master class session in the TIFF lightbox. While at parts somewhat cheesy to modern audience, its theme of 'good old days stained by the evil ideas of the outside world' is still relevent in this age.
Mini-Review: This film is rather under-rated (from where I have seen) for its funny and subtle wittiness without boarderline embarassing humour. It might take a bit for those who are used to clean-cut and outright laughter to realize the 'oh!' funny a few seconds after the fact, but the entire film is completely worth the time to watch and enjoy.
Mini-Review: The dialogue isn't as witty as I expected and the tension didn't substain long enough for me to have any lasting feeling. The action sequence is nice but with very little cohension. However it's still a relatively well made redux in comparison to the original film.
Mini-Review: Got a free ticket for a screening tonight. For someone who has seen some of the earlier film from this franchise, this is definitely did a good job on preserving the low-brow, questionable humour that was its trademark. Since it's been a long time since I last saw of those films I had a tough time on placing some of the minor characters, so it might be wise to brush up on the prior films a little before watching this.
Mini-Review: While the plot is cheesy, character developement is almost non-existent, its dialogue are packed full with entertainment and humour. A film to watch just for fun, but not much for anything else.
Mini-Review: I am slightly disappointed that the storyline was trimmed so ruthlessly in the aim of fitting the original story into an 2 hour film, as some of my most-loved scene were altered or omitted. The cast, however, are excellent and absolutely fitting to the characters they play. The cinematography is stunning and well-matched to the atmosphere for each scene. The music used also added the heavy intensity of mood of each character.
Mini-Review: This film would probably done even better if they follow more closer to the book itself than to invent plots. I am no expert in costume design, but some of them could have a better choice of colour. The obvious avoidence of violence that is expected of war and the forced-positive characters only adds salt to the already wounded film.
Mini-Review: I tried hard to like it in some way or another, but the joke falls flat within the first 10 minutes and it's all downhill from there.
