90 Grizzly Man (2005) - Jul 24, 2010
Mini-Review: A study of nature? No, the study of a very troubled man. Treadwell, disappointed with the human world, clings to an idealized fantasy life that destroys him. There's always a high pitched desperation in his voice, a hint that he is just about to snap. It just gets worse as Herzog starts focusing more on his personal video journals. There's ironic foreshadowing in the tapes too, as if fate is having a laugh. Sympathetic and fascinanting film.
90 Synecdoche, New York (2008) - Jul 24, 2010
Mini-Review: I... agree with the film. This is a display of misery with very little of Kaufman's humor but a lot of his deconstructive genius. It's not conventional storytelling -- it's probably the representation of the illogical all-encompassing meta play Hoffman hopes to make. There's a lot to unravel, if I ever felt like watching thing this again.
70 The Curious Case of Benjamin Button (2008) - Jul 24, 2010
Mini-Review: A heartfelt, middlebrow Fincher? Almost. The film starts with Pitt as nightmare midget out of an Aphex Twin video, no matter how much fuzzy filtering and swelling score you put in there to conceal it. The script is full of good natured characters and tidy situations that tie neatly and move the plot along as inoffensively as possible. Whether it's some calculated Fincher evil or not, I have to say the film did move me in the end. Tasteful film, from a director who knows better.
80 Pineapple Express (2008) - Jul 24, 2010
Mini-Review: Unique. The climax is a little disturbing, but everything prior to that -- golden. I love the movie's tone, reminds me of the action scenes in Life Aquatic. The violent ending is supposed to be ironic I guess, but seeing these lovable stoner dudes casually murdering people is very... un-dude, man. Other than that, great comedy. Great performance by Franco, very funny dialogue.
80 Double Indemnity (1944) - Jul 24, 2010
80 Tropic Thunder (2008) - Jul 24, 2010
Mini-Review: Very funny. Tom Cruise and Downey Jr. are rad. It's a sharp Hollywood satire, that unfortunately, has a big Hollywood resolution. I like the kid villain, Stiller being forced to play a retard in a POW camp, and the awesome trailers.
90 Sullivan's Travels (1941) - Jul 24, 2010
Mini-Review: I like the rapid fire wit, the screwball relief, the sudden sharp turns into darkness. The film is constantly contrasting glossy Hollywood with depression era reality. What I loved the most is Veronica Lake. She doesn't get to coast on her golden looks. She delivers every droll line perfectly and radiates a weary charisma that makes you wanna hold her. She's kind of a loser and that's beautiful.
70 Knowing (2009) - Jul 24, 2010
Mini-Review: It's not that bad, really. I like the ending, pretty ballsy.
70 Watchmen (2009) - Jul 24, 2010
Mini-Review: Technically flawless, painstakingly resembles the real thing, but film is not the medium for this story. It will remain brilliant in book form, which is where Moore intended it. This film is the work of a very gifted parrot. The source is so good, though, that the parrot itself achieves greatness at times.
85 Let the Right One In (2008) - Jul 24, 2010
Mini-Review: Features the most endearing child massacre ever. The vampire is an alien, asexual creature, curious and lonely and the way it tries to fix itself up and look pretty and impress the other kid is sweet. It's a movie that cheerfully crosses the line and portrays vampire love just the way it should be -- fucking creepy.
