Bio: I grew up in the 80's, so I understand that I'm going to be biased in liking certain films more (i.e., TMNT, the Home Alone series). The reviews I write are really just short blurbs about my overall feelings on the film in relation to other similar movies or anything that struck me as particularly awesome or awful; I try to stay away from just talking about the plot or story too much.
Recent Rankings
80 Full Metal Jacket (1987) - Sep 18, 2009
Mini-Review: As far as war movies go, this is up there, but my problem with it is that it's essentially two movies. The film has two very distinct parts: boot camp and war. The boot camp portion of the film is far more compelling and interesting than the war half, though that's not to say the war half is bad. The name of the boot camp drill sergeant escapes me, but he's awesome.
90 The Dark Knight (2008) - Sep 18, 2009
Mini-Review: It's been awhile since I've seen the other Batman movies, but this is probably the best one by a long shot. Probably the best comic book-to-film adaptation, period. Heath Ledger's Joker will go down in movie history with some of the great movie supervillains. Visually stunning, great acting and a great story all make this one of the best from '08.
50 Terminator Salvation (2009) - Sep 18, 2009
Mini-Review: This movie LOOKED really cool. Visually stunning stuff. The story, however, not so much. Not one of Christian Bale's better moments and I happen to be a huge Bale fan.
96 Donnie Darko (2001) - Sep 18, 2009
Mini-Review: I've seen this movie probably a dozen times and I'm still not sure I completely understand everything, but this is an awesome film with a stellar cast. Above all, the reason why I love this movie so much is that there is not one movie you could compare it to; it is truly a unique piece of art. And also, they don't mention this in the genre list, but at times it's absolutely hilarious. One of my favorites.
10 Encino Man (1992) - Sep 18, 2009
Mini-Review: I think I laughed twice during the movie, so we'll give each laugh five points, but overall, this movie sucks so bad. I sat through it politely when someone put it on the other day and tried my best to hold my breath. Was Pauly Shore ever funny? Show me a man who thinks so and I'll show you a moron. Awful movie.
85 Glory (1989) - Sep 18, 2009
Mini-Review: It's strange that a movie with Broderick, Freeman, and Washington (among others) doesn't get talked about more often, especially since this is a good movie. I felt like Broderick was miscast, but otherwise, this was solid. The battle scenes are awesome and a lot of this movie is extremely well-shot. Denzel and Morgan Freeman have great chemistry and their scenes are the most enjoyable in the movie.
90 District 9 (2009) - Sep 18, 2009
Mini-Review: One of the most unique, compelling sci-fi movies I've seen in a LONG time. That said, the alien weaponry was clearly taken almost directly from video games such as Half-Life 2 (gravity gun, anyone?). Even still, awesome movie. Worth seeing multiple times.
92 12 Angry Men (1957) - Oct 30, 2008
Mini-Review: A classic, timeless movie with incredible acting. A blueprint piece that shows how a film can be made without tons of fancy sets and millions of dollars in budgeting and still be great.
75 Drumline (2002) - Oct 30, 2008
Mini-Review: Maybe not the best movie in the world, but still, not bad. Entertaining and great music with a decent, somewhat original story.
90 South Park: Bigger, Longer, and Uncut (1999) - Oct 30, 2008
Mini-Review: I'm a self-confessed South Park fan, so I may be a bit biased in my rating, but this film was simply awesome and hilarious. It was everything great in a South Park episode and intensified. The musical numbers shine here, too. A great job by Trey and Matt.
