Mini-Review: Director, Richard Ayoade, captures the essence of being young and being in love all while giving us beautiful shot after beautiful shot. Watching Oliver and Jordana is so real that it gives me butterflies, a testament to a couple of the best teenage performances ever. Submarine is one of the rare films that bottles the human spirit and then releases it upon its audience.
Mini-Review: A very mediocre comedy that tries to set itself apart with an 80's gimmick.
Mini-Review: The Duel is a beautifully shot period piece that doesn't show enough conflict to make the conflicts feel important. Acting and directing are up to par, but the lack of tension in the writing majorly hold The Duel back from being anything more than pedestrian.
Mini-Review: The characters of Another Year are both believable and relateable. The tone and cinematography help show the change from season to season without the change overtly being waved in our face. My only gripe is that it just isn't the type of movie I prefer. The camera in Another Year is like a window. I, the spectator, is looking through the window and watching reality unfold. This obviously makes the movie seem genuine, but reality isn't always entertaining .
Mini-Review: This movie is good for a couple of laughs, but the last 20-30 minutes what really saves The Foot Fist Way from being a movie that's barely worth a watch. Those last 20-30 minutes are gut-wrenching and really make you feel for the lead character.
Mini-Review: A passable film that never really decides whether it wants to be serious or comical and does neither efficiently. The characters aren't exactly cardboard cutouts, but I never really "got to know them" either. The story is very basic. The music sometimes compliments the film very well and other times seemed to be a bit over the top. The direction was pretty damn good, especially a couple of the scenes toward the end. As I said at the beginning of the review, it's passable.
Mini-Review: Collateral fades into a bit of generic unbelievability in the final act which takes a lot away, but it still manages to be a better than decent thriller. For the most part, it does a good job of keeping the scenes tense and interesting. Not only does Cruise pull his roll off to perfection, but Foxx and the supporting actors show their talents off as well.
