85 The Visitor (2008) - Mar 28, 2010
Mini-Review: Well Acted. Realistic take on arab immigration issues in post 9/11 NYC. All characters retain their dignity, while the story goes out of the way to avoid hitting hard. Given the climate this was filmed in this is not surprising. Jenkins puts up a great illustration of ineffective US white suburban rage.
89 The Player (1992) - Mar 18, 2010
55 Law Abiding Citizen (2009) - Mar 18, 2010
Mini-Review: Just total crap, plot makes littles sense and advocates for "Saw- like" ethics. Avenging white man decides to gruesomely kill his family's murderer and wipe out the Philadelphia Judicial System that failed their persecutions. Torture porn, advocation of libertarian/"conservative" right wing white male terrorist fantasies. Would be harmless if not for a current real world media climate preaching similar messages.
91 Fahrenheit 9/11 (2004) - Mar 18, 2010
93 Good Hair (2009) - Mar 18, 2010
Mini-Review: Excellent documentary presentation of the reality of hair and self image in the American Black community. Rock is smart and funny. Rock avoids hitting community too hard with his conclusions in order to provoke meaningful discussion. Rock still a comedian takes his role as journalist seriously. In a different world he would certainly command the same audience and respect as John Stewart. I would invest in Rock's next planned serious cultural effort.
71 9 (2009) - Mar 18, 2010
Mini-Review: Animation well done. Plot overly cultic and ridiculous. Could have been something.
60 Bernard and Doris (2007) - Mar 18, 2010
Mini-Review: High production values. Both Sarandon and Fiennes played each role well. However the characters were not written to be very compelling. Story doesn't really know where it is going or what it wants to say. Are we to feel sorry for the empty lives of the wealthy and frivolous and their sycophantic and possibly exploitive retainers?
92 Bowfinger (1999) - Mar 18, 2010
Mini-Review: Martin was smart, tight, and wonderful. Frank Oz fabulous. Wonderful satire and commentary on the Hollywood system while at the same time featuring one of the best ad placements since Castaway. Murphy and other cast work off Martin well. Very very funny. Many self critical self references in the piece. That Eddie's multiple roles were strong and not over done.
84 Bringing Down the House (2003) - Mar 18, 2010
Mini-Review: Steve martin - claver as always. Donna Edwards manages to believably cycle through every known black movie stereotype in her satirical character, working well off of Martin. Much to love, funny.
88 The Princess Diaries (2001) - Mar 18, 2010
Mini-Review: Great movie to talk about body image, and intra school social relations with pre-teen daughters. Not so excited about the concluding advisor role of the princess's friend. Hathway and Andrews are wonderful together. Certainly worthy family fair.
