Bio: I'm a chemistry major at WVU, and a film buff by night. I'm fairly sure I've single-handedly saved some small movie rental places back home from going bankrupt-and bought the entire collections when they did anyway. I'm a fan of anything involving drugs, drinking, and dark and tortured souls, but do enjoy the occcasional glitzy glamorous blockbuster from time to time.
Recent Rankings
95 Layer Cake (2004) - Jul 11, 2008
92 Thank You for Smoking (2006) - Jun 27, 2008
Mini-Review: Very well done, and Aaron Eckhart was amazing as the smarmy politico-very well done film. It manages the idea of "think for yourself" and a set of anti-morals without being preachy, and that's hard to do.
88 Hot Fuzz (2007) - Jun 27, 2008
Mini-Review: Not a good as Shaun of the dead, and slow up until the middle, but its still quite good.
65 National Treasure: Book of Secrets (2007) - Jun 02, 2008
Mini-Review: Not bad, but far from great. There's not as much action, and I just couldn't help but feel that everything in this movie was incredibly forced. The first one was decent, but this one is just horridly mediocre.
88 Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull (2008) - May 23, 2008
Mini-Review: Not as good as Crusade or Raiders, and on par with Temple. John Hurt does a good job of "crazy old guy" and Shia manages to pull of the fight scenes as good as Harrison did back in his prime, but I could have done without "Indiana Jones fights against aliens"...by far even more out there than the plot of Temple, right from the getgo. At least Raiders and Crusade were marginally believable.
92 Iron Man (2008) - May 10, 2008
Mini-Review: Downey Jr. proves once and for all that he can act. I have to disagree a bit with the soundtrack-but everyone has different ideas. Paltrow was by far the weakest link-Bridges' bad guy is amazingly well done, Downey Jr. makes us believe that he IS iron man. With a better climax fight than any other superhero movie to date, Iron Man has to be the best movie to come from a comic book in a long time-it's a film that can stand on it's own, and that says a lot.
85 Fast Times at Ridgemont High (1982) - May 10, 2008
Mini-Review: Not a phenominal movie, but it's not intended to be. It's a good, solid film that's a lot better than your average teen schlock. It has lightness, comedy, although it's not as strong as some other teen classics, it definitely ranks up there as one of the best teen films of all time.
80 Le Grand voyage (2004) - Apr 25, 2008
Mini-Review: While it starts to drag in points, the film manages to do a really good job of being a journey of self-discovery and understanding without hitting you over the head with the metaphors with a metaphorical hammer.
65 Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story (2007) - Apr 25, 2008
Mini-Review: Not Apatow's best by any means. Reilly is amazing in it, but the jokes lack luster and humor half the time aside from a few random funny moments.
62 The Indian in the Cupboard (1995) - Apr 22, 2008
Mini-Review: It gets points for being a good book.
