Mini-Review: I appreciated the playful subversion of hollywood cliches, but it went a bit too far, actually seeming _too_ self-aware at times. Many jokes and scenes go on a bit too long, but beginning with the first car chase the movie seems to devolve mostly into over-the-top absurdity.
Mini-Review: Mostly entertaining (enhanced by a more than competent soundtrack from Mike Shinoda), but not something that merits more than a single viewing probably. The action eventually seems somewhat samey, such that the films 100 minutes are at least 10 too many. Also, while I don't fault the movie for having what little plot it does, I do fault how flimsy that plot ultimately feels. I wonder if Hollywood can do better...
Mini-Review: This is an audacious film with a fine performance by Jean Dujardin. Unfortunately the story itself is fairly pedestrian and the pace drags a bit toward the middle, with the characters feeling somewhat underdeveloped throughout (though knowing what I do now of Valentin may alter my opinion some upon a second viewing).
A couple minor nitpicks: the "heroic dog" trope is fairly tired and the sound in the dream (and voice in "Pennies from Heaven") was more distracting than clever.
Mini-Review: Flawed, but entertaining.
Comedy often too self-aware &/or out of place. I dislike the overtness of Sid's non-PC-ness & the elder (& then younger) daughter's foul mouth + how revealing his dad's death "explains" his behaviour (& his hidden intelligence).
Silly--Scottie's "apology". Matt: running in slippers. Thorson: "I'm going to hit you" & Sid's later nonchalance when calling him a prick. Unexplained--Matt: (evidence for) true reason(s) for not selling + finally forgiving wife.
Mini-Review: B&W used to good effect (though disliked stark electric chair scene), e.g. the ominous meetings between Crane & Dave (especially at Nerdlinger's) + the sunlight through & shadows of the prison bars during revelation of Heisenberg Uncertainy defense. Sadly, things go somewhat downhill starting w/ the superfluous blowjob / crash scene. Crane's blame for Tolliver's death seems contrived as Dave's assault history would surely come out. Also, what's the deal w/ the door-to-door salesman flashback?
Mini-Review: Contrived, but not unenjoyable ...I'd give it another watch if given the chance I think, even if only to take a more critical look. Worth the $1.50 for a midnight show at the local second-run theater at least.
Mini-Review: A shallow homage that extends perhaps an hour of story into a grueling 100+ minutes, I feel my current rating of 45 might even be too high. Despite being a decent looking film (save for the horribly-distracting faux-grain effects) with some ok performances, the story itself is poorly paced and mostly just bad (and not in some sort of slyly-cool-meta-ironic-hipster way either). There's little to recommend here unless you've got a craving for some gratuitous gross-outs with a side of Rose McGowan.
