80 68% Minority Report (2002) - Rated 05 Apr 2020
"A fantastic Roman Pulanski sci-fi Neo Noir. The problem is it was directed by Steven Spielberg."
91 93% Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (2018) - Rated 16 Dec 2018
"2018 seems to be the year that they finally figured out Spider-Man. Enough call backs to remain true to it's roots, the film also "updates" the series for the new generation in the best way possible. Art design is a hyperbolic, almost synesthetic re-vamp of the old Kirby comics. Probably my favorite movie of the year; watch this even if you've never seen a comic book before."
85 83% Sing Street (2016) - Rated 23 Sep 2018
"Carney brilliantly captured bleak melancholic romance in Once a little over a decade ago, and this time does the same but with enough infusion of whimsy and teenage idealism to make a Happysad movie that's more happy than sad. Give this a try even if it's "not your kind of movie," if it softened my crusty curmudgeonly heart, and it'll do the same to you."
69 26% Only God Forgives (2013) - Rated 24 Mar 2018
"Imagine Steven Lynch and Stanley Kubrik go on a drug and violence fueled bender through Bankok and you have an idea of the vibe of this movie. Not "good" per say but definitely scratches that hyper-violent-surrealist-psychological-thriller itch...if you get those."
40 7% I, Frankenstein (2014) - Rated 24 Mar 2018
"Ever wonder what it would be like if Frankenstein was actually a hansom anti-hero who teamed up with gargoyle angels and fought cardboard cutouts of demons? Me neither. In any case this movie is crap."
92 94% The Shape of Water (2017) - Rated 05 Feb 2018
"Never thought I'd see someone pull off a whimsical anti normative cold-war era love story between a mute woman and a fish man but, I mean, Del Toro, right?"
81 72% Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017) - Rated 26 Dec 2017
"Pulling an almost complete 180 from Episode VII, The Last Jedi tries to subvert the tropes of the narrative; heroic gestures fail, legends are flawed, and Bad Guys don't always lose. Aside from a story arc that could be removed entirely from the movie without any real change in the plot, VIII is a welcome change for the franchise"
75 50% Thor: Ragnarok (2017) - Rated 15 Nov 2017
"Going for more of an Asgaurdians of the Galaxy vibe, Ragnarok has a more lighthearted feel with plot progression that is frenetic and at times messy. Most of the second film is Lampshaded entirely, and I'll never forgive them for killing any hope of a Planet Hulk movie. Still, has enough self-aware humor to make it the best of the three of the worst of the five Avenger subtype movies."
93 96% Blade Runner 2049 (2017) - Rated 06 Oct 2017
"Villeneuve has cemented himself as one of the new Great directors by creating what I didn't think was possible; a fantastic Successor movie. Terrific performances and astounding set pieces form something that is beautiful, thoughtful, tragic, and (most importantly) blissfully, glacially slow."
89 90% The Big Sick (2017) - Rated 12 Jul 2017
"Normally I stay arms reach from Rom Com's, but this is a refreshing departure from the genre that is (at the risk of being obvious for a movie based on the actual relationship of the lead actor) more honest than any romance story in the past few years."
