92 Fight Club (1999) - May 30, 2010
Mini-Review: A great movie, a somewhat skewed-take on Bakunin's Anarchy but nonetheless a great watch, Brad Pitt delivers his most unforgettable role, Edward Norton acts brilliantly, the script is pure Gold, the directing left a little to be desired if you ask me. The ending was rushed and poorly executed. Watch it for Brad Pitt.
90 Irreversible (2002) - May 30, 2010
Mini-Review: People calling this bleak, merciless, over-the-top, or people saying they have walked out, are the people who should not have seen this movie in the first place, because they have missed the point. The point of this movie, as Roger Ebert notes, is to present you with the act of vengeance, and the crime, before showing you what life was like before that. It's antichronological nature forces you to view the actions reprehensibly a priori, the pregnancy twist is stupid, should have been left out.
80 The Hangover (2009) - May 30, 2010
Mini-Review: Take out Galifinakis and this movie would absolutely blow. But regardless, this movie still is another in the new-style of Hollywood "guy-comedies" that I love. Keep 'em coming. Laughs in every scene, watch it high for best effect.
89 Princess Mononoke (1997) - May 30, 2010
Mini-Review: A beautiful, mature, animated film that starts off average, peaks in the middle, and goes down-hill before the climax hits. Nevertheless it is a great movie, just don't expect to love the plot arc, watch it for the animation and the lesson it holds.
86 Shutter Island (2010) - May 30, 2010
Mini-Review: Scorses could have done better, this movie feels forced, as most movies with Leonardo Dicaprio at the helm do. But there's more to it than that, the music, the island itself, is all terribly exaggerated and seeks to "frighten" rather than just "give the chills". I think its a wonderful script, and idea, and I particularly loved the very-ending. I'd say this film is a must-see. Just don't expect to love it. The twist was a little obvious but perfectly executed.
95 The Big Blue (1988) - May 30, 2010
Mini-Review: Watch the Director's Cut. This movie imparts a feeling of peace, love and respect for nature. There's more to it than meets the eye, give the quirkiness of the film a chance, and you will be rewarded. You'll laugh, cry, love.
82 Léon: The Professional (1994) - May 30, 2010
Mini-Review: I think there's alot more to this film than most read into it. I considered it a fairly interesting juxtaposition of the true nature of men vs women. When the action is there, it is good, though there are many very forgettable scenes. It's a guilty pleasure anyway you slice it. This is what happens when you have great actors, premise, and ideas to convey, with a bad script.
91 Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter... and Spring (2003) - May 30, 2010
Mini-Review: Every scene is highly memorable and deliberate, though the pace may be slow, it's a wonderful cinematic study in the Buddhist concepts of the circle of life, mindfulness and presentness, forcing viewers into a state of peace and tranquility. Beautiful. Acting could use a little work, but I've realized that Asian standards for acting are different from American ones.
