10 The Savages (2007) - Feb 20, 2008
Mini-Review: If you want to see Philip Seymour Hoffman and Laura Linney watch Peter Friedman die for two hours, this movie is totally for you. Just an unrelentingly depressing film, with no clear message beyond "dying is no fun for anyone." Pretentious, stereotyped characters, from the unkempt professor to the same I-can't-handle-this-but-maybe-I-can character Linney seems to play in every movie, to the mystically wise black foreigner who can put everything into perspective. This sucked so hard.
85 The King of Kong: A Fistful of Quarters (2007) - Feb 11, 2008
Mini-Review: A great documentary/character study of two polar opposites, a pair of Donkey Kong champions competing against each other for title of world's highest score. Best of its type since American Movie.
75 Being There (1979) - Feb 11, 2008
Mini-Review: A great performance by Peter Sellers, the story of a man raised by television then suddenly thrust into the real world, where his naivety is taken as quiet brilliance. Though it can be somewhat forgiven for it - as it is meant to be allegory more than anything else - the story is utterly unbelievable, and the film suffers because of it.
90 Brysomme mannen, Den (2006) - Feb 11, 2008
Mini-Review: A fantastic, dream-like movie, in the spirit of Brazil or Dark City, though I wouldn't disparage Den Brysomme Mannen by calling it derivative. It's a sort of allegory for the superficiality of modern life, without being heavy handed.
