Viewed September 18, 2015. Still not sure if I liked this movie or not. It has some gorgeous sequences, and really brings to life this bizarre culture I never would have thought existed, but it also feels like it doesn't actually SAY anything, nor is it ever as profound as it probably wants to be, or thinks that it is. It's mostly just fine.

I'd probably like this even more if i was still really into verite documentary-type stuff, but even so it's really good for what it is. There are definitely some great Harmony Korine-esque moments here, even if the material is spread sort of thin even at such a meager run time, which sort of gives it the feel of a glorified web documentary that Vice would do (as does the subject matter and somewhat uneven aesthetics).

While it's true that the time these under-educated & seemingly jobless (at least the legal kind) young black men spend using public spaces as their own personal race tracks is time not spent engaging in more overt criminality, I cannot comprehend the mindset that would argue in favor of such threadbare "harm reduction". The film thankfully, documents the predictable damage that will be wreaked on the young by the profoundly misguided priorities & values of the under-educated adults around them

Like if Harmony Korine and Werner Herzog teamed up to make a documentary on John Waters' home turf.

Honestly, 12O'CB could be told in 1/2 its running time. Features multiple extended sequences of quad & motorbike fetishism coupled with mindless cat and mouse games with the law. Pug's story paints a picture of a kid swept up by the action like a kid would be. He could be doing a lot worse for himself & at the same time, far better. Is this cataloguing the indoctrination into something the director see's as negative? Or, is this just capturing the allure of a niche Balitmore movement?

George Washington meets Hoop Dreams, yet doesn't quite sustain the poetry of the former or the cultural/personal insight of the latter. It's there though.
