12 Strong

12 Strong is a mediocre movie that wants to coast by on its perceived inherent inspiration. It has no ambitions, very little of interest, and fails to do anything to differentiate itself from the multitude of other same-y war movies out there. It had the pieces to do it, too. But nothing makes 12 Strong stand out from the crowd, even if its final action scene does serve as a decent climax. When you fail to give us an interesting plot or engaging characters, we're going to feel bored.

From the 'brawn and swagger' Bruckheimer stable, this is actually more restrained and thoughtful than expected, though the likely deliberate naivete (and ignorance) of the geopolitical underpinnings makes this potentially fascinating tale a bit frustrating at times. Taken at face value as a blatant piece of jingoist action, it is well constructed by Fuglsig and gives Hemsworth another opportunity to prove himself a solid leading actor; bit of a sad waste of Shannon in support, unfortunately!

Great cast, but so so so generic. The scene with Hemsworth's family at the beginning was so cliche/stock that I heard static instead of dialogue.

Silly propaganda lark with very little entertainment value.

This is mostly a pretty decent war movie. Chris Hemsworth made a charismatic captain. A story of heroism in the earliest parts of the Afghanistan war was interesting and sometimes exciting. It was a little mind blowing to see modern soldiers ride into battle on horseback. The fighting scenes seemed very realistic. It also provides some slight insight into the situation and culture of the region.

Meh. They ride horses and shoot. Guys that look foreign are killed. Good effort but not really worth the time to watch it.

Honestly, without the horses this would have been such a boring thing to watch. It's very generic with the characters who are completely forgettable and the action that serves its purpose but doesn't really make you feel too thrilled. Seeing a cavalry attack in Afghanistan was interesting, though. But I kept asking myself how all the dudes who had never ridden a horse in their life were such experts in doing so without much explanation over it? Now THAT would have been interesting to learn.

If you're looking for an action movie this might work for you. Just don't expect much from it.

It doesn't do a whole lot to separate itself from other war movies about Americans, which isn't meant to sound as dismissive as it does. I'm not one for Jingoism, nor am I pro-military... but I can still get behind a tale of heroism if it's told well. This is just kind of there, acted decently, shot competently, but with little to actually care about or say. Which is sad because the story itself is pretty extraordinary and would lend itself well to a movie.

A decent enough action film for the most part. Maybe a little boring at times? The whole riding into battle on a horse felt like a tall tale, but what the hell do I know...

A very generic, run of the mill by the numbers military film that plays it very safe. That said it is entertaining enough for what it was.

Competent action, compelling war scenes, but the whole Americans bringing together rival Afghani factions thing is a little bit too hoorah for me. I get that there's some of element of realism here, but it sounds too patriotic to be true.

I forgot to rate this movie when I saw it, and when I saw I hadn’t rated it, about a year later, I realized I had forgotten it’s existence. I still don’t remember most of the film aside from the climax, but I remember thinking it was perfectly “okay”, so this rating is probably close enough. Definitely a wasted cast.

Heroic american soldiers on horses... using unlimited ammo and GOD mode cheats. Good story but told a bit like Rambo VII.

Good story, decent cast, wasted on a terrible director. Lack of wide establishing shots or use of a map gives us no sense of where things are in space. Every scene looks the same and we have no idea where in Afghanistan we are relative to the other random place names that pop up on the screen. Too many tight shots, not nearly enough wide ones make it feel low budget at times, even though this probably wasn't. Only good part of the film is when Michael Shannon calls in an air strike.

Underdeveloped TV movie. Hemsworth's accent was very good though, and there's a funny finger joke.

Yeah, this was pretty shitty and bland. Skip if you care about your time.

Mitch Nelson may be the leader of his 12-man team, but in many ways he's one of its least experienced members. He's never killed a man before arriving in Afghanistan. And when he does so during a bloody skirmish, the experience rocks him.

I enjoyed this more than most war action films. There was no need for the first 15 minutes of the movie. It's not a movie that's gonna stick with you, but it was enjoyable rental.

Surprisingly decent 13 Hours prequel

Although the real story is interesting, the film is not. Can not pass mediocrity even with this solid a cast. It's not boring but it does not offer anything in a genre filled with great examples.

The cinematography is pretty awesome but the story isn't new and it's your usual American military propaganda. Watched: 6-Feb-2021

Any cavalry charge against an armored enemy is cool to watch, for that this does not disappoint. Otherwise its a middling movie with people that are way too pretty. They tried to cram too much into the exposition, that the emotional attachment to character never really happens.

A good cast and decent direction make for some gripping battle sequences, although the movie is not particularly memorable.

12 Strong has a solid cast, honorable intentions, and a thrilling, fact-based story - all of which are occasionally enough to balance a disappointing lack of depth or nuance.

Pretty cliché, predictable, lots of 'American' macho men and lame lines, but still not that bad.

Good performances in a fairly generic military flick. For such an outstanding real life achievement the movie plays it pretty safe and makes every battle scene feel identical. I still enjoyed it for the most part but it's missing that little extra to push it over the top (likely tied to the debuting director). Generous 6.5

Not very interesting but if looking for one dimensional characters riding around shooting stuff up it's alright for a hangover on the couch.
