Making a transcontinental plane flight in only thirteen hours was quite an achievement when this film was made in 1936 -- but it was not impossible, as indicated by Paramount's last-minute decision to "downsize" the film's original title, Twenty Hours by Air. In anticipation of Airport 34 years later, womanizing pilot Jack Gordon (Fred MacMurray) is called upon to safely guide his plane through a blinding blizzard. (allmovie.com)

What I got from this was that flying regulations sure has changed a lot since the 30s! Just about every plot point wouldn't have been possible today. And it was so ridiculous that it really effected the enjoyment of this. Didn't help that the reactions of the bad guy was so random and unnecessary that he became laughable. Regardless of all the weird and insane plot points in this, it's basically the absurdity which makes it fun. Can be compared to all the brainless action movies in modern times.
