Documentary-style prologue follows training of O.S.S. agents for WWII work behind enemy lines. One of the group is a German "mole;" leaders Gibson and Sharkey are aware of this and scheme to feed him false info about the invasion of Europe, while the real agents go to France to find a secret V-2 rocket depot. But the German spy outsmarts them and rejoins his people knowing too much; Bob Sharkey takes the risk of going in after him. (imdb)

What a movie! The first half is phenomenal. It then drags just a bit but a great finale. Early well-made spy thriller, ahead of its time. The title doesn't quite suit it, but that happens.

Standard B-movie script is given an overwhelming boost of life by Hathaway's snappy direction and fine performances all round, but especially charismatic Cagney and slimy Conte. A little slow to start, but once it gets going its very exciting, and amusing to see an early bit by Karl Malden (Red Buttons and E.G. Marshall apparently appear, but I didn't recognise them!)

SPOILERS ABOUT THE ENDING: That ending... The shot of O'Connell smoking a cigarette, while you hear the whipping, the reveal of Sharkey's tortured body, that laugh...simply incredible. I wish the rest of the movie was as good

Getting older, but James Cagney could still kick ass! There's perhaps little to make 13 Rue Madeleine (1946) stand-out among the bunch of World War II espionage thrillers out there, but there's enough going on here to get entertained by Cagney correcting a mistake he did while training spies. Living the tough guy image.
