You know how old-timey movies have the scene of the guy on the ledge about to jump? That's this entire movie. Predictable, but very well done, with good photography and a stellar performance by Paul Douglas as the good-natured cop. The side stories about the onlookers and how it affects their lives are perhaps superfluous, but they're nice and they give the story a little breathing room. Bonus points for the dig at religious nutjobs, but points off for the unnecessary psychological explanation.

The core of the film, a potential suicide jumper and the well meaning cop trying to talk him down, is very solid and well acted. It builds up at a good pace, balancing the tension of the situation with enough new developments that there's always something to concentrate on. The surrounding fluff takes away from it though. There's the expected bit of 50s psychobabble but what I really found annoying were the crowd asides. Still, a good watch for the two leads who make up most of the screen time.

The classic guy-on-ledge-threatening-suicide movie. Many good performances, including a standout by Robert Keith (Brian Keith's dad) as the disturbed man's estranged father.

Entertaining drama about one man's suicide attempt. Good natured people and old psychological damage keeps rearing its head, as well as the man on a ledge's delicate state. Mostly, though, its Paul Douglas' great turn as the street cop who finds himself as a negotiator that really makes the movie effective, even if its final few minutes don't quite work.

Novel concept, but it would have been tricky to make it work, and this script just does not deliver. Dialogue like "Life stinks and you know it! It's a rat race! It's a rat race! It's a rat race! / Sure, but there's a lot in it that's okay / What? / Well, maybe I should get a preacher or somebody like that to explain it to you" just doesn't cut it for me, nor do the improbable details of the plot, and the acting is pretty hammy too.

I enjoyed it. Perhaps not so much for the depressed man Richard Basehart, but for Paul Douglas as the good street cop trying to prevent the man from going through with it. A dolled-up Barbara Bel Geddes appears as his ex. So does Agnes Moorehead & Robert Keith as his parents. And with each guest we get a little bit of his background as to why he's become a sad man. Nothing earth shattering, but just little things to keep it interesting. Douglas likable presence makes the story come alive.
