Kevin McKidd plays Frankie, in this semi-autobiographical tale expressed mainly in flashbacks. As a grown man, Frankie is faced with the choice of falling backwards into alcohol-soaked violence, or facing up to his dubious past. To do this, he has to explore what led him there and break the cycle in which he finds himself trapped, if he is to achieve his dream of finding (and keeping) true love. (Tartan Films)

Feels like it would work better as a novel.

Top badass moment? “Hope is a strange thing; a currency for people who know they’re losing.” I can think of endless situations in my life where I can use that little gem. This movie really ought to be called Melancholy. It’s mostly slow, thoughtful and kind of depressing; and it’s got skinheads in it too. It also gets an extra 5 points because it’s written and directed by Richard Jobson and I'm going to go and see The Skids in a few weeks. No cats, chainsaws or decapitations.

"Occasionally Jobson makes the predictable first-timer's mistakes (a tendency to over-egg the stylistic and pretention puddings, to name but two), but it's clear that here is a striking nascent talent. Scottish cinema has found another compelling voice."

I remember this being a powerful and obviously personal film for Jobson.

An admirable homage to A Clockwork Orange.
