The film version of the Broadway musical comedy of the same name. In the days leading up to July 4, 1776, Continental Congressmen John Adams and Benjamin Franklin coerce Thomas Jefferson into writing the Declaration of Independence as a delaying tactic as they try to persuade the American colonies to support a resolution on independence. As somebody with a degree in both History and American Studies, (student debt flex), I actually don't mind the dry parts of light political history in between all the songs, especially as somebody who doesn't always really like musicals. Unfortunately the music here isn't quite "Hamilton" or even the great, Tenacious D: "Ben Franklin was a rebel indeed, he liked to get naked while he smoked on the weed, he was a genius, but if he was here today, the government would fuck him up his righteous-A!"

No one got laid after taking their date to this. Oh my lord, I watched all 2 1/2+ hours of this thing.

The first two hours-ish are kind of a fluffy nothing, with a lot of superfluous musical numbers and way too much focus on how horny the Founding Fathers were. But then, it takes a hard turn into being about slavery, and the hypocrisy of Northerners who profited off it, and the question of whether independence was worth allowing slavery to continue, and the possibility that it wasn't, and this is all really good and important but the movie this was before just can't narratively support it!!

A funny musical that does seem to drag at parts with long parts with no music. Also a few songs fall completely flat and seem out of place or just muddled performance. But the leads are great, have fantastic charisma and constantly made me laugh. A fun, forgotten musical.

Despite the requisite debate about slavery near the end, for the most part the film was a whitewashing bore. I love George Feeney, but John Adams was written as an annoying interrupting twerp. Ben Franklin's inclusion into every scene was basically fanservice. Forced and many unnecessary songs. Musicals are supposed to have songs that advance the plot, not detract from it with side characters like Jefferson's lovely wife. Fav scenes: -Lee; "Cool, Cool, Considerate Men" (sorry Nixon).

It's a musical about the writing of the Declaration of Independence. What more do you need than that?

Really quite tedious. I found myself hanging my head each time the congress took another musical detour. Could have used a good editor.

As the film started I feared I was about to lose two hours of my life to second rate tunes and a very unlikely theme for a musical ... and guess what. - I was wrong. True the numbers aren't memorable but there is a real sense of history and the human struggle for identity. Benjamin Franklin adds humour and colour. Overall, an under-rated musical and film worth a viewing.

This is a great film! The transition from stage to film actually works for this story. It's well acted, funny, and great history! It's my annual 4th of July movie!:D

The actor who played Ben Franklin creeped me out a little, and the songs were for the most part forgettable, but this is an okay movie despite all that.

an utterly toothless comedy about american politics that somehow manages, to its detriment, to be completely apolitical. Daniels is good, however.

Overlong but fairly enjoyable, and memorable in concept, but in concept alone. Every thing else falls under forgettable.
