It explains practically nothing about the world, focuses to much on the romance, it brushed past events too quickly while also being uninteresting, and yeah I figured they weren’t going to show sex or much torture so this is just a botched version of the literary masterpiece, go watch the John Hurt one, its perfect

Anderson makes a serviceable stab at adapting the arguably unfilmable text; his is an understated, noirish vision of Orwell’s oppressive future, boasting excellent low-budget set design and benefiting from the presence of three great actors in O’Brien, Redgrave and Pleasance. The message and ending are much less convincing than those of the novel however, no doubt being monitored closely by the production’s shady CIA backers.

Appropriately stark, bleak adaptation of the novel ineveitably feels to rote and paint-by-numbers to be a great film, and is seriously hampered by a dull, miscast O'Brien in the lead, however the 50s version of a dystopian society is fascinating to behold, and Redgrave makes for a chillingly ambiguous government official. Full marks for not attempting to soften the conclusion of the story, however when all is said and done, it all falls somewhat flat. Still a worthy curio.

If you are going to watch one of the 1984 Big Brother movies, this is the one to watch. It at least tells the story in a complete and understandable way even though it is quite outdated. Unlike the remake made in 1984 it satisfactorily conveys the original story. I can't give it very high marks, but it does outshine the remake with good storytelling however the production quality is very poor.

Some really cool imagery, and good acting all around. It feels a little bit weakened by how by-the-numbers it is as an adaptation of the book, however.

This looks sort of old fashioned now. Its vision isn't that terrifying, after what we've been through in the last ten years. It isn't helped by the fact that Jan Sterling and Edmund O'Brien have no chemistry together. Only Michael Redgrave gives a performance worthy of the Orwell original.
