Grim, frightening and without hope. Considering the dense source material I was impressed with the adaptation, even if a lot of the details had to be left out.

What horror! People, discouraged to think for themselves, indoctrinated to blind obedience by omnipresent displays, which bring nothing but altered truths, manipulative clips and systemic propaganda to their eyes. Indifference on everyone's faces, nobody talks to or even registers another, except for superficial glances and unavoidable interactions. And the clothing! Ridiculous! Ok, ok, you got me. I forgot what the movie's about, so I thought I might as well tell you about my last subway ride.

Well, this was a barrel of laughs. I’d like to see the version with the non-Eurythmics score, although I’ll not rush to do so. My pal told me that they once showed this in English class at school; another lad got an erection during one of the nude scenes and this has not been forgotten in the intervening c. 30 years.

Loyal adaptation which contains most of the important plot points and aesthetics of the novel. What it lacks is that book's heart, impact and detail. I'd recommend it as it can be quite intriguing for fans and newbies alike, but the book is just so much better and successful.

Captures the mood of Orwell's (spectacularly dark and depressing) book, yet never fully conveys the feeling. The great set designs, muted colors, stark cinematography and strong performances are spot on, but the lingering uncertainty, the deep existential dread that builds up inside the reader during the course of the book never really comes across here. I also suspect that many scenes wouldn't make much sense if you haven't read the book. It's still really good though. Quality is quality.

perhaps beside the totalitarian dystopia, the most interesting thing about the novel is a discussion on the existence of things outside our perception of them. this movie captures that and other ideas fairly well, but perhaps it has more preoccupations with making a faithful adaption than a truly cinematic expression of orwell's themes.

Oppressively, unpleasantly gloomy adaptation of the infamous novel; while "sunshine and lollipops" would not have been appropriate, the film falls into the trap of being a grim experience, rather than being an engaging depiction of a grim scenario. The three leads are terrific and couldn't be better suited, especially a wan Burton whose skeletal face and shuffling demeanor define (and dominate) the second half. More interesting than enjoyable.

I really wish I could call it a classic. It's certainly very good, anchored by a great performance by the perfectly-cast John Hurt and some great atmosphere, but the script just feels hollow compared to the book. Which I know is a horrible, impossible standard, but by God, I want the tension and terror to be unbearable, and it never really gets to that point - more just "gloomy."

As a fan of the book, I had high hopes. The film follows the plot reasonably well, but it completely fails to convey the fear and dread that Orwell inspires. It feels like the characters are just walking through this reality, rather than living it.

The most cold, oppressive, inhuman attempt to create an accurate adaptation of its source material. This film focuses on the names and facts of Orwell's novel, at the expense of most of its emotion and pace. Maybe that's a deliberate choice. Overall, unlikely to be a fulfilling experience, but it's consistently evocative -- especially for the majority of Americans who have already read the book.

While I do have problems with the original book this is a good adaptation, it does everything an adaptation should do. It condenses the original source material without missing the point or dumbing it down. Doesn't make any unnecessary changes, and when it did make changes it was for the better. I hate to say it but this is pretty much my standard for a good adaptation.

While it's easy to blame Orwell for my bleak outlook on life, I suppose it would be even easier to blame my parents for popping this tape in the VHS player that fateful Saturday night after filling up on pizza and Fanta at the local Chuck E. Cheese.

A bleak and pointless movie which offers no real connection to the viewer. This is a sad and deficient movie. The story development is ridiculously ill conceived, as the script was atrocious. It was also shabbily filmed. Nearly a complete waste of time, even with the Suzanna Hamilton nude scenes. While I usually love to watch John Hurt and Richard Burton, neither were satisfying in this horrendous tale which is themed more fascist than prophetic. Basically a miserable remake of a bad movie.

It's hard to imagine an actor more suited to the role of Winston Smith than John Hurt, just as it's hard to imagine any film capturing Orwell's vision better than this; Michael Radford perfectly establishes the atmosphere as a director (and props to the production design), and as a writer he quite skillfully compresses the novel into a fairly tight package--indeed, it's perhaps a bit TOO tight at times. Strong support from Richard Burton and Suzanna Hamilton; haunting score by Eurythmics.

They followed the plot of the book pretty faithfully. However, as we've seen in many film adaptations of books, this isn't always enough to make a successful movie. It's hard to pinpoint exactly what was missing, but I think it had something to do with both the lack of first-person perspective and that it didn't quite capture the atmosphere. It looked pretty good and the performances from John Hurt and Richard Burton were great. It doesn't measure up to the novel, but it's a decent adaptation.

Although it is admirable in its capacity of creating the feeling of dread and futility; I do not think it is a good adaptation of the book as it focuses too much on the drabness of the setting and not on the essence of the messages of the book. Sometimes images ruin ideas and this is what happened here in my opinion.

This movie is quite depressing and if that's what they were aiming for when they filmed it, then it's spot on. The cinematography is great, the acting is great. But while the psychological part of the movie is convincing, I'm afraid story wise it doesn't sit that well. The background of the movie is never really explained and moments of 1984 don't really make sense. My guess is you have to be familiar with the book to understand certain elements of the movie; and that brings it down a bit.

As good a movie version of _1984_ as we can ever hope to get. John Hurt is perfect for the role of Winston Smith, and is even made up to resemble George Orwell. The production design and costumes are great. That being said, 1984 is way too intellectual a novel to ever translate well to film. You could make more changes to the story to make it play well as cinema, but if you did it wouldn't be 1984 anymore

Like all the movies which expressed the idea majorly through symbolisation, it makes the basic principle of how totalitarian works more protruding, meanwhile because of being highly symbolised, to some extent it lacks authenticity a bit. I think it depends on which perspectives you hold, out of the system or in it. Secondly, it depends on which style the movies choses, political and philosophical, or historical. Generally I don't fan in the former one, personally it reminded me of China.

It only implies a lot that's explained in the book. One can accuse the movie of being hard to follow when not familiar with the book. On the other hand one can see this as a realistic portrayal, without making explicit what for these characters is evident. In its realistic bleak depiction of dystopian society it excels most. It succeeds less in bringing across the emotional dread of living in one. Great performances by JH and RB do help bringing the characters alive nonetheless.

Ok, ok , so the book was great. But because it leaves so much to imagination. When translating this visually you have to be a bit more clever (i would say) , because theres no way that everyone would act like that in the 80's. People where a lot more aware of things, literacy was up etc..even in war times shit progresses. But everyone in the movie just acted so dumb ,ignorant and obnoxious, i find it impossible to believe. So they could have made it a bit smarter! Too bad!

The sad part is that any adaptation of this think-y book just won't have the punch the words do, because so much is internalized. And if you "improve" it, you have the purists screaming that the film isn't faithful. This does well, though, with its powerful cast (it's backwards, I know, but Burton exudes an early Hannibal Lecter) and some beautifully ugly (almost steampunk) set designs and props.

Despite being filmed at the time the book is set in (and at the locations in the book), this isn't as good as it could've been. I suspect that George Orwell would be doing 320 RPM in his grave that his book has been used as a title for reality TV... The book is astonishing, read it if you haven't.
