It's New Year's Eve 1981, and a wild assortment of comic characters are looking for romance in NYC's rollicking East Village. Can a poser, a hunk, a teeny bopper, a gabby cabbie, a cute klutz, and a bevy of too-cool-to-cope artists find love before the stroke of midnight? [Paramount]

Rewatch. An interesting look back at 1981, though I'm not sure how authentic it is. Dave Chappelle looked so young! Kate Hudson had an interesting outfit. Paul Rudd played such an asshole to a nice Courtney Love. Great music that is likely holding this up from streaming or a blu-ray release. Fav scene: Love leaving the diner and crying and a waitress hands her a napkin.

'80s-set '90s party "comedy" stacked with cult faves & soon-to-be A-listers yet long-MIA from home video and streaming--DVD regularly goes for 50+ bux. The music rights probably have something to do with that. It's also just a drag, man. No exaggeration to say the dialogue is comprised predominately of drunken self-pity. Which may be more or less the point (see sheepslasher's review, tho' the ladies get their share). Surprisingly, Hudson is the brightest spot, and as the least credible character

Ensemble films are hard to pull off, and 200 CIGARETTES falls prey to some of the genre's traps: thin characters, repetition, and a muddled story. There are some funny vignettes, and some good performances from a fine cast; Dave Chappelle kicks ass, as always. There's a great vintage soundtrack; likely the main reason this was set in 1981. The script isn't that hot, though, and some of the characters are highly annoying (Gaby Hoffman, especially), while parts of the story make little sense.

Oh to be a young adult in the early 80s, when all people did was smoke cigarettes, say witty things, and try to get laid. Those were the days.

A totally pointless film produced by MTV? No. Where? I've never seen such a creature before. It seems like such a rarity that a channel that produces TV like Date My Mom and Wild Boyz would put out something bad. OK, that's enough sarcasm.

Limp, lifeless series of characters colliding with each other might have worked better as a more cohesive anthology, but all of these characters are so bland and insipid, with only Plimpton and Hoffmann managing to imbue their performances with a pulse. Becomes tedious and tiring by the mid-point, then sprawls into an unnecessary epilogue which adds further bloat and leaves the film on a sour note. Terrific pop soundtrack gives you something to listen to if you get sick of the dialogue!

This film has a good ensemble cast. Some of the characters are more likeable than other ones. The script has some good scenes and dialogue. Overall I would recommend this film.

Much like a New Year's party, this movie entertains while it's on, and it's only after it's over that one realizes how bad it was.

200 CIGARETTES is a flimsy pretext to deliver a highly concentrated dose of nostalgia. It's not an unpleasant experience, thanks to the fantastic ensemble cast, but it is a rather derivative one. It's the type of film that expends its greatest effort on gawking at outmoded styles of dress and painstakingly re-creating the sonic zeitgeist of early 80s New York City than drawing its characters in anything but the broadest strokes.

The director previously established a career as one of the most prolific casting directors in Hollywood so it's no surprise that her movie is stuffed full of beautiful people and stars. Don't remember the story perfectly but recall this as fun albeit lightweight entertainment.

A fun movie following the stories of a bunch of people in the 80s. I wish there was more at the end though. Dave Chappelle, hilarious

Don't be bamboozled by the great cast and soundtrack. This thing is like an itch that you just can't scratch.

Fun ensemble piece. Different people in the city. Bit slow at the beginning but finishes strong. "I just love her big round head."

So the new romantic comedy is officially one of several stories simeotaniously, well okay. So talking heads predominate, well okay. So long as everyone is this cute & clever, & doing such a good job, its difficult not to enjoy. Some of these faces are getting to be a bit common, however, which makes me wonder if I'm just watching a bunch of stars getting it on.
