While attending one of India's premier colleges, miserable engineering students and best friends Rancho (Aamir Khan), Farhan (Madhavan) and Raju (Sharman Joshi) struggle to beat their school's draconian system, which, in their eyes, unfairly values grades over creativity.

You're pulled along by a great tear-jerkin' buddy story with fantastic characters all around, meet a few snags of Bollywood cheese, and realize you just watched a pretty fearsome unschooling movie.

To be fair, there are a few entertaining moments and the performances for the most part aren't that bad. But what an awful script. Melodramatic clichés galore, terrible humor, simplistic messages, one-dimensional characters. Even the songs aren't that great. It's as if someone copied the absolute worst Hollywood has to offer. Much of the film resembles REAL GENIUS, from the unflappable, infallible hero to the evil professor and the suck-up rival. And that's not a movie you want to aspire to.

Certainly I was not expecting anything like this. The movie started ok. I was expecting it to lose its grasp at some point since it has a long span but it got better and better. It both got me laughing and crying. Hard to come by such an entertainment in a movie of this genre and this length. All is well.

This movie is idiotic, the plot is awful, predictable and very very childish, but pretends to be serious sometimes... it's very annoying don't waste your time. I subtracted some additional points for the NASA's pen thing; get your facts right idiots.

At first I thought it was really fun then it seriously turned out to be the most didactic movie ever made. Maybe it could be a good educational movie for children at school. Yet it has nothing to offer for real movie buffs. Also I thought Rancho was gay.

This was not bad at all. Only a couple of songs, which were entertaining, and a pretty engaging overarching plot with punchy scenes and good cinematography. It's long and full of cliches and some of the humour is a bit juvenile, but it was entertaining and well meaning.

Off beat comedy with a wonderful message. Three idiots are attending school but one of them is extraordinary in almost every way. It was fun to watch the silly antics and see the clever ways the plot turns. Most of this is very unpredictable and some of it is hilarious. About half is subtitled, and it is sometimes hard to follow, but well worth watching.

After you get along with the fact that the movie is from Bolywood and includes about 1 hour of Indian singing, it's actually quite interesting. I still can't handle their enforced display of emotions and ignorance of certain very obvious themes, but otherwise the movie's quite a far flick from the Holywood comedies. While the story's not really anything new and will not make you laugh a lot, it's quite amusing.

Has the distinction of being the most overrated film on the IMDB. Decent film, but nothing that sets it apart from an average film. Also why were 40 year-olds in college, and what was so great about reinventing a helicopter with 4 propellers.

Only finished watching half this film, with a version missing 2/3rds of the subtitles. And read the wiki page. Good enough. The acting was well done, and the musical bits were fun and energetic. But the film doesn't know what it wants to be. It features 3 bumbling students with hearts of gold loving life while playing pranks on their iron-fisted professor. A proff who drives 2.5 people to suicide, and would better fit as one of the darkest villains in a tense thriller. Too long, poor sequencing.

Easy to see why this was a big hit. It's still schlock (two weddings! three suicides!), but occasionally the comedy hits and the "message", while (ironically) didactic, is a good one for its audience.

The movie is a little idealist but it hits the right notes. It is a typical Indian movie with the whole gauntlet thrown in - comedy, drama, romance and obviously the song and dance sequences :P You need to be brain dead not to have laughed your guts out at least in a couple of scenes, if not more. Definitely worth a watch.

An amazingly humorous movie with stellar characters and a setting that allows it to touch on some dark themes without taking the comedy away. Also really, really, REALLY long. Please, for the love of God, just watch it when you're in a good mood, comfortable position, and fully awake because it will be worth it. Though I won't pretend that the movie doesn't have a great deal of Narm Charm with a lot of idealistic but nonetheless heartwarming scenes.

Yet another movie that could have been so much better than what it is. The story of the movie has great potential but took a nose dive half way through turning towards the cliched melodrama of Indian Cinema. The movie could have been shorter than what it is if certain unwanted drama dropped. Over all a decent entertainer, watchable once.

Could have been condensed. Rancho's ideals are great, though, being a previous Chatur person myself. The random musical numbers were strange. I feel like I just haven't acquired Indian humor sensibilities yet (which isn't the movie's fault).

I was not expecting such an excellent movie. Even into the first hour I was wondering why it was rated so well, but it just builds and builds into one of the best feel-good movies I've seen to date. It's a little cheesy at times, and Bollywood stuff happens, but that can be overlooked. Hell, the lovers' theme was actually pretty catchy. At the end of the day, a movie like this should be judged on emotion, and this movie delivers in a big way.

It's a good movie, but the more I rewatch it, the less I like it. Hirani tends to these pat simple answers to complex problems, while avoiding placing blame. The forces that drive and profit from the education system are never questioned, or punished. And the female characters are after thoughts, their concerns not confronted.

(Spoilers) As someone who actually attempted suicide back in University this ended up hitting pretty f***ing close to home, so despite it's lack of subtlety or nuance, I'll stand behind any film that has the same message that this does. On top of that, it's one of the rare bromances that is both touching and depicts a mostly non-toxic masculinity. Not the best Bollywood film ever, but certainly has a lot more substance than it's terrible title suggests.

3 Idiots is a decent feel-good-film that remains engaging for its lengthy runtime. Following your passions & challenging convention are positive themes even if simplified. The darker moments however are quickly followed by a humorous scene (mostly slapstick) which may help the pacing but reduces the emotional impact. The sound editing and music is cartoonish & obstructive with unneeded dance numbers. The acting is okay in places and poor in others. The ending is cute but unbelievably optimistic.

What starts as a bright and entertaining critique of higher education (through a Bollywood infused spin on ANIMAL HOUSE tropes) takes an unfortunately long-winded nosedive into melodrama, careening into an ill-advised and tasteless exploration of suicide and mental breakdowns, ultimately resulting in a confused and confusing second half which throws in everything but the kitchen sink in an apparent attempt to justify a hopelessly padded 3 hour runtime.
