I was not a big fan of 300 but I thought the fight scenes were awesome, and I was at the very least entertained by it. Rise of an Empire is a whole other story. Not only were the action sequences significantly worse than the original, but the amount of cheese the dialogue contained in this would be more than enough to turn all the French into gluttons. And Persian suicide bombers? Ancient terrorists? Are you fucking kidding me? I am not one to get offended, but fuck was I ever offended.

Rarely does one leave the cinema regretting no appearance of Gerard Butler. But I actually did. Stapleton, a good actor, doesn't provide enough oomph, and Eva Green, in a ridiculous role, haven't got the required flair for going big that added a lot of fun camp value to '300'. She does, however, flaunt her (decidedly un-spartan) spartans. Which, as always, gives rise to... ehm, applause? Jokes aside, the action scenes are energetic, the pacing swift and, crucially, it's only 102 minutes long.

Wow this was shit. Everyone blew, even that Eva Green chick and most of the CGI was horrid. Everyone awkwardly acts and floats around obviously fake green screen sets and the blood looked like stylized crap. Made me want to see Gerard Butler and the crew from the first film, if that says anything. 10 points for each boob shown I guess?

It's gory, it's got a ton of slow-motion action, it goes back and forth between this action and overly macho and clichéd expository speeches. Its plot is non-existent, and most of its characters are generic white men. Eva Green crafts a character and carries far more of the film than she should have to. It ends on a cliffhanger without the promise of a sequel, which is unforgivable. If you liked the first one, this is more of the same.

Too much overblown testosterone and erect penis spraying for any normal person to handle. A guy who sat in front of me was cackling and fist-pumping every time a Persian was ruthlessly slaughtered, so that was funny, and Eva Green does a good job of chewing up every scene, even if her acting was hilarious. If only these MRA reddit males understood how loved these movies are by the homosexual community. That's about all I have to say about this movie.

First rate actioner is admittedly silly as a lesson in history (or even pure logic) but as a balls-to-the-wall thrill ride, this is pretty great; the tone is set early by Green's deliriously evil villain and some full-blooded action scenes (seen in 3D via giant swathes of red covering the screen). This may well be earnestness sliding irrevocably towards camp, but whatever it is, it's great fun, moving at a good clip, and even has some time for a sense of humour!

This is a sequel to a film that didn't need a sequel. It tries to emulate the first film, but is its inferior in pretty much every conceivable way. It's not memorable, perhaps except for Eva Green's titillating performance (pun intended), and it's bereft of any charisma.

300: Rise of an Empire is exactly what it says on the tin. I wasn't overly impressed by Zack Snyder's 300, so it's no surprise that this long awaited sequel underwhelmed me. This is probably a 14 year old boys idea of a cool film, but I find it all so exhaustingly dull. The fight scenes in 300 where unique at the time, but this sequel has nothing new to offer. Eva Green is an interesting addition and at an absolute push she's the films only saving grace. Otherwise this is completely forgettable.

To be honest, I watched it because Eva's breasts and I am not disappointed. With breasts I mean. They are really fine. And she either 'fucks' good or she just acts 'fucking' great. Last observation I have made is that (2) women here are really badass whilst all men are bunch of wusses. With Stapleton being alpha wuss and Santoro being beta wuss.

Instead of sticking to the cinematics from the first installment, and doing a mediocre, yet watchable sequel, they simply made a long episode of the series "Spartacus". The dialogue, the horrific blood splatter, the small dots in the air (what is that!?), hell, even the main character is as close to a spitting image as possible. Sparta --> Sparta-CUS. Let's face it the first 300 was dopey but this one just goes over the top with its violent historical fantasy glam rock. This is the expected orgy of muscled men shouting and flying through the air in slow motion slicing people in half. It's just too much of rote imitation of Zack Snyder to be anything special. Eva Green is nice to look at least but the whole warrior chick thing and shoe horned in obligatory female empowerment scenes feels tired and patronizing.

It wasn't very good, but I thought it was okay, for what it was. It's a silly, ostentatious action movie, and although it takes itself too seriously, I thought it was kinda fun. I didn't appreciated the shots that were obviously meant to capitalise on the 3D effect. I liked how it worked with the events of the first film. I thought Eva Green was fun. The lead actor, whoever he is, didn't have any charisma. Yeah, I don't know, it's not great, but it didn't offend me with its faults.

The first 1/2 forces fans of the original 2 wade through a now stagnant river of Hoo-Rah speechifying, unimpressive naval "strategies" & more arbitrary shots of slo-mo violence. The second 1/2 however, brings variety as it segues from preposterously over-the-top CGI bloodletting into preposterously over-the-top sex. At that point the film zooms in & makes all the carnage refreshingly personal w/ Eva Green's Artemisia providing a welcome feminine variation on all the browbeating bad-ssery.

Rise of an Empire is a side story told alongside the original 300 and it belongs on the side, far to the side really. Not even on the plate. It's like parsley. When you are a kid, you try it once thinking it's exotic. From then on, you just flick it off your plate whenever a restaurant deems that it is "fancy" enough to include it. Lena Headey's character is much stronger in this film. Alongside Eva Green, you can tell that they wanted this movie to have more female badasses. It did - two.

The script has some of the punch of the original, but it's a lot more muddled by a worse director who apes the style without understanding the meaning, especially apparent in the constant use of slo-mo blood spatters. Still, it's not a total loss, and Eva Green is fun to watch.

I would have rather watched a film told completely from the perspective of the Persians showing a more in depth rise of Xerxes and his crushing of the rebellion in Babylon. Just imagine an hour and a half prequel to 300 filled with over the top violent battle scenes juxtaposed with crazy Snyder-esque androgynous Persian orgies. I'd buy that for a dollar!

Sorry to see Zack Snyder involved in this at all, especially in the dull paint-by-numbers screenplay--the largest number of which had to be truck loads of fake blood that were used. I elevated the score score somewhat on account of the intense combat-sex scene. The movie only has a kissing-cousin relationship with the historical background, which is largely shrouded in myth anyway.

300: Rise of an Empire similarly recounts the concurrent Greco-Persian seagoing Battle of Artemisium. It also jumps back to the Battle of Marathon to give us some historical context and then forward to the sacking of Athens and then back to ... well, let's just say this tale isn't particularly linear. And if you don't know your history, you'll likely be left scratching your head. It's all coated in splashing geysers of blood and gore that gush from a bigger-than-life version of frenzied battle.

As spot-on as the visual style was in 300, as wobbly and straight out annoying is it here. Sullivan Stapleton can't even get close to what Gerard Butler was for 300, and Artemisia being the main villain instead of Xerxes is another major step down for me. Of course this movie isn't all bad, but in my opinion, it's too flawed to be called decent.

Believe the hype, Eva Green is in top form in this role. This movie is worth watching for her performance alone. Great visuals and action (like the original), this time primarily a naval battle. I know the Athenians are not supposed to be the warriors that the Spartans were, but I wish there was a little more depth there. Aside from Themistokles (Stapleton), they were pretty much indistinguishable. I would recommend this, especially to fans of the original.

You don't get a rise really from the movie until the final scene but it is quite good. I don't know if Sullivan Stapleton will be remembered for his role as Themistocles like Gerard Butler will be for his role of the Spartan King, but he did the role justice. Eva Green will be remembered though as her fierce Naval mastermind/warrior woman...

Instead of wasting all of the budget on some dreadful CGI blood and Playstation One looking special effects, I think they should have invested more money on a better script and a better director. There is no real substance to the story but just alot of men fighting and groaning. I think everything was focussed around making it look good for 3D that every other aspect of the movie has suffered because of it. If you liked the first film definitely watch that again rather than this rubbish.

The first one was watchable, the second one had some decent naval battle going on, something not seen often in movies taking place in Greek and Roman times, so that's a plus. It's still pretty easy to see that the slo-mo gimmick, while briefly cool, slyly masks the processes of turning forty minutes of content into a one hundred minute movie.

Just as enjoyable as the 1st one. The style remains with it's sharp imagery and no holds barred action. Butler doesn't return, but they gain the great Green who steals the show. She exudes sexuality and power all at the same time and really adds a lot to the film. It may not be the most accurate history, but who gives a fuck it's a movie not a documentary.

For one thing, it's mostly at sea, so everything's got a dull blue-gray sheen, and there are a lot of shots of oars moving in slow motion, and sea battles just plain aren't as kinetic as the hand-to-hand variety. And for another thing, the film doesn't really give us anyone to root for. Kinda disappointing.

This is a bad movie a second time, with a director who, despite his best efforts to look like Zack Snyder, ISN'T Zack Snyder and shouldn't have tried to be. Eva Green and her bare chest is a high point (though that sex scene was self-aware silliness). The persistent narration can get annoying. Don't see it in 3D. I love the universe too much to hate it.

The 300 sequel is bloodier, bigger, and even more surreal in its atmosphere. Eva Green does a good job of hamming it up. She seems so sinister and yet incredibly seductive. The best parts of the movie take place with her at center stage. The other characters just lack charisma and the dialogue is quite bland. There's little lighthearted banter, and not enough focus on the secondary characters, which acts counter-intuitively to the melodrama of the action. The storytelling is also a bit messy.

More of the same stylized medieval violence and gore that made up the first 300, but this time there are more varied settings for the warfare. Eva Green's completely nuts villain makes it worth the watch if nothing else. The story is really just an excuse to show all of the slow-motion battle scenes, so your enjoyment will vary depending on your tolerance of repetitive action. I found it to be a slight improvement over the first film.

All of the action, none of the substance. The magic was gone, and with it, the credibility. I felt affronted. We stood with the Spartans as they made their stand in the first movie, cheered our heroes on as they fought through the lens of lore and myth. This time, we hid our heads, embarrassed we bought the ticket in the first place. I'm just glad to see it wasn't directed by Zack Snyder, though his name is attached to this sad sequel. This shouldn't have been made.

Very cool action movie, however the buildup and character development were pretty crappy. Also, I think it missed all the 'flare' of the first raw action movie '300'. The last fightscenes were extremely cool and everyone interested in actionmovies should see at least the ending. Also Eva Green is mega hot ;). A lot of sea in this movie..

The endless battles, while sometimes exciting, become a bit wearying by the time the film wraps up. And one bit with an exploding boat trick seems ripped off from Game of Thrones' Blackwater episode. Eva Green is crazy and hot and badass though, very fun to watch. Salvages the movie.

Action was as expected - pretty good, but I found the story and characters very bland. Eva Green's Artemesia being the exception. But on the Greek side I had switched off before halfway, just cutout characters with a bit of forced sentimentality thrown in at the right points. Sullivan Stapleton really didn't have a lot to work with, but I don't think he was real good either. OK I guess, but nothing more. Shame I couldn't get into it, I walked in wanting to like it.

Simple Story. Fun action. Gore. Slow-Mo even during sex scenes. It's pretty much the same movie as 300 but not as good. But the CGI is terrible even compared to the original, which is 8 years older than this. And the lack of Zack Snyder directing does hurt the film

Am I getting deathly bored of that slo-mo-CGI-splattered-nonsense style, or did this movie just look significantly cheaper than the first part? Wait, can it be both? Because it's both. So this is basically a boring and dumb retread that lost whatever shreds of entertainment the previous 300 provided. Luckily I am not a 14 year old boy trying to look cool in front of the other kids so I don't have to pretend I enjoyed this. Still, I appreciate not getting beat up today. Thanks in advance!

A homoerotic feast where penises are replaced by swords and semen is transposed for comically spurting blood. The story is non-existent, and so much slow-motion is there, that should it have been removed the whole film would have probably lasted around 45 minutes! Also, the sex-come-fight scene between Green and Stapleton's characters: hilarious.

It's at its best when it tries new things, like naval tactics and rough sex. Director Murrow and/or his DP have a knack for Eisensteinian imagery. Ultimately the characters (save for Eva Green's) are boring (Themistocles is a joke next to Butler's Leonidas) and the stylized violence is familiar and meaningless. 300 was a truly original exercise in reactionary decadence that fit its time and place all too horribly well. Now it's just a joke.

From a psychological point of view, perfect movie. Yes, it was a testosterone blood bath, but it felt so refreshing compared to other things that you can see these days in the cinema. No long, pointless dialogues, yet still the story is developing and the characters are not dumb. Really wonderfully done, I bow to the creators of this story.

I know 300 is flawed and stupid but I still like it because there's something there. There's nothing here. Nothing but some guy with a beard I've never seen before in my life, and Eva Green who is as insufferable as always - together they make up about 1% of an interesting character. 1 point for every minute of combined screen time for the members of the original cast, -10 points for CGI Gerard Butler. Impressively, this manages to have worse special effects than its 8 year old predecessor.

"300: slightly interesting battles at sea" is a true gem of the "i don't care what about, let's make a sequel!"-genre. Opposed to what I expected, it depicts the events surrounding the spartans' battles, rather than just the aftermath. This made both movies seem completely tacked on to each other, especially since they just cut in footage from the original. Cast and acting were laughably uncharismatic, directing and fx worse. Eva green could do with some "support". THIS! IS! SPORTS BRA!
