Top Badass moment? Xiao Wu changing the CD for the neighbourhood tai-chi session in the local park. A good rock track will do them a lot more good than all that hippy nonsense they were listening to before. Rock is badass. 1 cat and no decapitations. Even a brief scene of cat petting fails to lift this film on to a more bearable level. It was a cute looking cat though.

When children are granted agency & complexity in the movies & in the wider culture, it seems like a radical act. The tiny single-take, often comic, always detailed vignettes that make up most of this movie reveal a young human being with a rich & mysterious independent inner life. Xiao Wu obsesses over his mother's much older tenant, cataloging the minutiae of his existence, & imagining him as a companion, a father, a role model. An erotic film in the strictest sense.
