Every shot is beautifully composed and animated; I can't imagine the amount of dedication that went into this film. The story starts out cute but becomes something painfully human. Unfortunately, the plot and characters are ultimately forgettable, really only serving as a vessel for the more memorable visual component.

All the marks are really for the animation (which is totally amazing) & the one or two effective scenes where the characters aren't opening their irritating mouths in order to philosophically whisper at you about what a total losers they are! The annoying voices in the English dub are terrible. Somehow they emphasise what a bunch of sociopathic introverted idiots all the characters are? I wanted grab Takaki by the neck & tell the little idiot to man-up & grow a pair of fucking balls.

A visual treat, and passes the time pleasantly and melancholily, as I like. But it didn't draw me in like some of Shinkai's other films. The characters and story just aren't that interesting here and there wasn't much payoff. Also, maybe I'm getting to the end of my ability to take seriously romances between children.

Really pretty and it captures a mood of light angst and love perfectly. Unfortunately the same moody emotions that make it so successful are also what make it a bit repetitive and tiring to watch even though it's barely an hour long.

I never cry at films. This time I just couldn't hold my tears. This is such a sad and truthful combination of fragments from life. Kinda like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind - searchers for love meeting, trying to forget everything, and meeting again, just to be hurt again. The visuals are so stunning that it feels like a modern day computer game with all the unreal lighting.

I like a good animation as the next person, but this movie never gave me the payoff. It starts with a soft promise, but drifts off at the end of each story. Leaving me wondering: that's it? I think of this movie as a mood piece, instead of an actual story line.

Woah. Watershed moment in anime ...in film. I haven't felt this evocation of time before--in any medium--not even haiku. The first chapter especially. Proust, in fact. More Proust than Haiku.

What starts of as a beautiful blossoming romance in the first story gradually becomes frustratingly pointless as only one character is followed through the stories and this character seems to come away at the end of the story a sad empty man. The last story sucked and didn't really tie things together too well the only plus of this story was the great song sang during the end of it.

I'm all about melodramatic romantic films, but this was just sentimental ad nauseum. It didn't earn any of the emotional weight it ascribed itself so it wound up feeling sappy. Nice visuals, though. I'll give it that.

A bit melodramatic, this beautiful anime focuses on unrequited love. But the first segment runs a little slow, and the third went so fast -- somehow turning into a music video -- that I'm not entirely sure how it ended.

I really dug it. It feels weird watching a movie that’s literally three short films edited together, and perhaps it would have been nice to hear more from Akari’s perspective. But this movie made me feel seen. I’ve been the guy who fell for someone he couldn’t be with. If you’ve ever been in that position, for whatever reason, this may strike a chord with you. It is a legitimately, surprisingly gorgeous movie, directed with written with ease. A short, bittersweet, sensational movie.

This movie is very melancholic, calm and sad, with various intensity of the last one. This is also a romantic movie,at least in some sense.Unfortunately,at the end it turned the wrong path and became too naive, even for a person who really likes romantic things as me.You will hear three stories, which are linked to each other. They are telling things which we all know, however, this movie is destined to feel. This was wisely made by knowing heros' thoughts. The music is nice, the animation's stunning.

Beautiful vivid and expressive scenery and absolutely marvelous use of light highlights this mostly tender, but very slow moving, Japanese cartoon about childhood love. The human figures are not nearly as impressive as the rich and detailed environments. The story is emotional and feels authentic but there is almost no excitement. If the human characters appearance and animation had been better, and the story was much more compelling, this could have become a high water mark for the genre.

The visual aspect of this animation is stunning. It takes the traditional anime look (which has basically been the same for 30 years) and opens a door into a new dimension of realism with its detail, lighting, depth-of-field effects and cinematic camera angles. It's a groundbreaking work of staggering beauty. Eye candy aside, the story is, well, different, which is not a bad thing in itself, although there are some dialogue pacing problems which make parts seem very dialogue heavy. Mixed bag.

The plot has been done before and better by other people. It is a very melodramatic film and premise. However, the imagery takes the forefront in this movie and dear lord does it deliver. This is by far one of the most gorgeous animated movies I have ever seen in terms of visuals; unfortunately, aesthetic pleasure far outweighs any depth or genuine emotion in this film. The first chapter was the strongest, and it just kind of decreased in quality as it went on.

This film sucker punched me...deeply. I wasn't expecting this kind of story and after it was finished, I was emotionally drained. The first two segments are outstanding, with characters and story lines that I could relate to in my past. The only fault I can find in the film, has to lie with the final segment. It starts off just as the first two, but then veers off to a musical diversion that doesn't work and kind of spoils what was becoming a masterpiece in my eyes.

Way too slow, heavy and emotional. Since the beginning it felt like watching a movie that is already started, the characters did not seem properly introduced and the story is told in a messy and confusing way. "5 Centimeters per Second" failed to keep me interested; I could not find a reason to keep watching it for more than 20 minutes. The animation quality was excellent though.

A gorgeously illustrated anime - the art and the true-to-life detail is just in another class. The story itself I found a little overwrought with dramatics - it's exactly the kind of thing that my angsty teenager self would eat up, but as an adult it all seems a little trite. Maybe a less singular romance focus, and expansion of other chracters, would have helped.

Beautiful art direction, wow. This film is excruciatingly Japanese, and the attention to detail is breathtaking. Regardless of all other aspects, 5 Centimeters Per Second is memorable for how gorgeous it is. Now, unfortunately, some other things aren't as spectacular. The conclusion is so irritatingly inconclusive that I had no idea the credits had begun when the dude started singing. There are also one too many obnoxious, poetic teenager lines of dialogue. Still, this was sad and pretty.

A wistful, nostalgic tone is woven through these episodes of youthful romantic pinings turned into bittersweet adult reminiscences. The art is uncommonly beautiful, with extraordinary attention to detail, gorgeous color and lighting, and images that deftly evoke a sense of melancholy. I could relate to the unrequited adolescent yearnings but had to roll my eyes at all the tinkly piano and whispered voiceover. I was easily charmed by the gentle rhythms, pleasant characters, and lovely visuals.

5 Centimeters Per Second or the unbearable internal monologue of love-struck teenagers. I liked the concept and theme of the film; that love unrealised is consuming if you don't move on from it, illustrated succinctly by the final scene with grown-up Takaki & Akari. The characters are sympathetic, but the dialogue gets a bit grating hampering the experience. Good visuals and a haunting piano score, but uneven pacing in an hour-long film.

A fine looking (and sounding) piece of anime, but the exposition heavy dialogue, and generally down-beat and morose characters, make this a minor chore, even at only 60 minutes. As with his later films, Shinkai creates a vivid and believable world for his characters to inhabit, and the first chapter in particular does score a few mildly resonant evocative moments in dealing with the relationship between its protagonists.

Wow, a emotional windmill which shows the effects of personal contacts with people and how we remember/perceive them compared to the the people who reciprocate or ignore these moments. The symbolism of life is represented in how unchanging you (reader)are, yet also how flexible other people are around you, the unfairness and unjustness of life. Yet we must carry on

Visually beautiful, every shot is carefully composed and crafted. The film tries to be about everything really - love, loss, absence of love. It's a cute romance, with two characters who are destined to never be together, all told from only Takaki's perspective. I love the bittersweet tone the film takes as the love interests drift apart, and Takaki wastes his life hanging onto the memory of a 13 year old girl he knew for a couple summers.
