Based on a true story. In neutral Turkey during WWII, the ambitious and extremely efficient valet for the British ambassador tires of being a servant and forms a plan to promote himself to rich gentleman of leisure. His employer has many secret documents; he will photograph them, and with the help of a refugee Countess, sell them to the Nazis. Wonderful spy thriller (with undertones of witty humour) powered by a first rate cast led by incomparable Mason, a master at capturing every facet of his character's multiple levels of deceit. Darrieux is his match in a less obviously great performance as his partner in crime. Director Mankiewicz's uncredited fingerprints are all over the screenplay, which provides clever commentary on the incompetencies of the governments on both sides, criticisms which still sting to the present day.

Suspenseful film, but the twists at the end can only be seen once for the first time.

Unless you count "North by Northwest," this is my favorite spy film. It is also one of the few Hollywood movies with a European sensibility. James Mason and Danielle Darrieux both give superb performances.

It's interesting that this is based on a true story, but I was never really thrilled by the film. James Mason is ok. The ending is a bit redeeming. Awful title for the film though.

Splendid spy thriller with Mason simply superb, Darrieux matching him, a sharp wit and beautifully controlled suspense.

Nice low-key, realistic spy movie that also touches on issues of class and government agency incompetence.

Smart spy drama based on a real event in Britain's Turkish embassy during WWII, what's not to like? Holds your attention, but the characters lack some needed dimension, and their arcs are a bit underwhelming. Given the period and location I feel like they squandered an opportunity for a compelling subplot to add some structural pizazz to this straightforward tale.

This scheming affair of international secrets has a lot of the right ingredients, and James Mason is smooth in his role shuffling the cards. Lacks that extra bit of spice to really become a suspenseful case of espionage, but got to love the ending reaction!
