Where's your god now, bitches? I didn't know Ford had something like this in him, a tightly paced scathing and bleak film without a worthwhile man in sight. Bancroft is great but that's not a slight against the others who all do well with their parts. I do have to wonder why the film isn't called 8 women though.

Handsomely mounted Ford that is overrated by anal auteurists who insist on finding great meaning and value in the poorly received swansongs of great directors. The focus on women is intriguing, representing a departure from norm, although Bancroft's attitude and mannerisms bear close resemblance to heroic male characters in Ford's westerns, including laughable lines of macho dialogue that are completely incongruous. The sets also detract somewhat from the intensity of the scenario.

An unusual detour from Ford's usual machismo-dominated morality tales, although Bancroft adeptly yet tragically steps into the part of anti-hero. Not at all enjoyable to watch, but a provocative swansong nonetheless.

Amazingly boring and so slow that I actually fell asleep, in fact that's all this movie is good at.

Not the best John Ford picture but Anne Bancroft does get a great closing line. But Mike Mazurki as a mongolian? That's a keeper.

John Ford's last film is one of his most thematically compelling, touching on issues of Christian hypocrisy, atheism, feminism and even a little bit of lesbianism. Ford keeps things interesting and always moving along smoothly. Bancroft is very good, and for the most part the rest of the cast holds their own. The most off-putting element was the blatantly stage-bound set. Other than that, however, not bad at all... and quite a surprise to see such unusually progressive attitudes from Ford.

Anne Bancroft is stellar as always, turning in one of her most remarkable performances. The problem is the racist, half-dimensional portrayal of the natives, proving that Ford's worldview was far less sophisticated than Powell-Pressburger's in the similarly-themed (and flat-out stunning) "Black Narcissus", which somehow seems less dated despite the fact it was created 20 years earlier. Nevertheless, Bancroft carries this film with a swagger that is truly a wonder to behold. Dr. Cartwright is a c

DVDRip no MakingOff.

While some of the casting and portrayal of the villains feels dated, this is a surprisingly dark, bleak, atmospheric film that is obscure for Ford but is among his most interesting work. The ending is fantastic, and the film is a brisk and eventful picture with interesting themes and characters and a very good score. Vastly underrated. I feel like this is one that will stick with me. It's hard to believe a film like this was made by Ford. At times it's a slight mess, but it's fascinating work.

I really enjoyed Ford's final feature. The drama consistently feels confined, the characters large in their small world, always brought together in tight spaces, which of course leads to conflict. Only a couple of lines of dialogue feel out of place, and Ford's placement of the camera feels fresh and interesting.
