My first Bahrani film. I definitely have to give him a closer look. I guess he really manages to capture the stupid truth about the effects of the economic crisis on the housing situation in America, but he also captures the cynical reality that it probably is for many americans. I loved pretty much everything about it. The old man broke my heart. *Very Good

Worth watching for Michael Shannon alone, he's that good (and this is by no means his best performance). The rest of the cast does a pretty good job too. In terms of the writing, the ending was poor, and frankly, lazy. But it's still a pretty interesting look at an antihero (Michael Shannon) who thrives in a particularly grubby corner of the real estate business. The writing borrows liberally from Oliver Stone's Wall Street, with some important updates. Definitely worth a watch.

The second film of 2015 about the mid 2000s financial crisis was mostly overlooked despite how it is arguably more effective. Cares less about over explaining the situation and beating you over the head with how terrible big banks are, by wanting to give you more humanistic drama. It's ground level, bleak, and mostly pretty depressing. Much like real life there aren't really heroes or villains. Mostly it's people mucking around in the gray middle.

I quite liked this film. It presents some interesting moral questions and is a pretty decent character study as well as a good examination of American/capitalist values. Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon are both great in this, making the simple story quite watchable. It was a bit formulaic at points and lacked a certain edge perhaps, but it's still worth a go.

It was pretty incredible to watch the main character transform gradually throughout the film. This movie feels like a personal documentary about America post-2008 housing crash. The events of the movie clarify the exact ways in which the big banks were (are?) engaging in fraud.

At the time of writing, energy and gas prices are soaring to record highs, kids are being sent to school with either an empty lunch box or one filled with only a slice of cold pizza and countless families are struggling to make ends meet, so I couldn't have seen this film at a more relevant time. Loved how it actively challenges the viewer with its core dilemma: how far is one willing to go once they have relinquished their moral integrity. Bahrani is honestly one fantastic director.

ikinci izleyiş. finansal dramaların çoğunun odaklanmadığı bir noktaya bakıyor ve değerini burada yakalıyor. yer yer aşırıya kaçıyor hissi veriyor olsa da gerçekliğin çok fazla ötesine gittiği söylenemez. filmde en sık duyulan cümlelerden birinin "get off my property" olması sanki yeterince bir şey söylüyor, bu açıdan finalindeki çözümlemeyeyazma olmasa daha iyi olabilirdi belki.

Shannon's character is the devil and he takes Garfield's on a fascinating journey through a moral minefield.

Featuring harrowing performances from both its stars and extras, 99 Homes surges from scene to scene with all the dark vitality of a man with nothing to lose. It manages to hit home a driving message about the absurd flaws of extreme capitalism, whilst simultaneously having you completely unsure what you would do in the protagonists position. In places tough to watch, this is not only a highly entertaining and tense film but also a truly thought provoking one. Highly recommended.

A deeply flawed film that tackles a relevant issue: the impact of financialisation on the housing market in late capitalism and its social costs. In an era where housing is speculative, where loans and debts are bought and sold for profit, the scenario of 99 Homes rings painfully true. Shannon is excellent as the 'devil' in disguise, and the film isn't scared to play in the grey, but the ending is too contrived, heavy handed and simplistic to satisfactorily deliver on its early promise.

Movie was decent overall - but it lost it's momentum when Michael Shannon stopped being as present on screen.

A little more could’ve been done with the premise and Garfield’s character, who has a pretty predictable character arc. Still, it’s a very engaging film with great performances, and yet another brutal look at one of the many flawed systems in America.

Shannon's delightfully over-the-top presence makes this more watchable than the script deserves.

Powerful drama about the recent home market crash in America, with incredible performances from Andrew Garfield and Michael Shannon. Has some important things to say about the morality issues of banks vs. homeowners and does a good job of not turning the obvious villain into a one-note plot motivator. The ending is a little contrived, but the powerful performances and overall message save it.

An incredible story of humanity told in a very honest, perhaps brutally so. What you get from this movie should tell you more about yourself than about the movie. Recommended as one to watch.

This was a really good film overall, well written, really well directed and greatly acted. All in all a good film apart from Garfield looking tad bit young. Creates a great and beliavable atmosphere that sucks you in and makes you wonder where it will go.

An okay film. I really liked the performance of Shannon. The characters felt a bit one-dimensional though. Was quite bored throughout the whole movie.

If you're trying to find antagonists and protagonists here, there aren't any. There's just a corrupt system that demands immoral action and punishes those who are blind to or refuse to take advantage of the framework. Even Shannon's character, who appears almost omnipotent in the beginning, is shown to be nothing more than a pawn.

While the plot trends toward predictability, 99 HOMES contains plenty of quiet, disarming moments of sympathy and pathos, plus a fantastic Michael Shannon performance.

This movie has everything - in an bad way: The doubts, the whinnying, the little man (in fact, 1000s of little mans in different colors, genders, ages), the pathos, the big you-can't-handle-the-truth-America-speech, the moral, the evil parties, the real values, Laura Dern (so distinctive in her exchangeability) and Andrew Garfield as a hero, who is basically doing nothing heroic (gosh, he even fleeces money from his friends and lies to everybody). In the end I was rooting for the bankers!

Solid screenplay, tight acting, real life scenarios. Not a flawless movie, but engaging all the same. Andrew Garfield should be an oscar contender.

Andrew Garfield continues to show he is an actor deserving of all the roles he gets. The man has yet to really be in a bad movie or a movie that all around failed. 99 Homes is an emotional film and it is this type of starring vehicle that is perfect for Garfield as he thrives on the ability to create characters that the audiences can relate with. Another fine film that demands to be seen. Do yourself a favor and check this one out.b

This is one of Michael Shannon's best performances. He has a lot of quotable lines all while smoking an electronic cigarette. This movie reminded me of a Paul Thomas Anderson movie, more specifically There Will Be Blood. The cast evoked strong emotions that never felt cheesy or artificial. It touched on parent child relationships, integrity, and the US economy in interesting ways. 99 Homes was a thriller that was unique and provided a breath of fresh air. I was let down by the ubiquitous ending.

A bit redundant and Garfield just doesn’t have the goods as a main character
