Wastes no time getting things going and keeps building momentum, getting the most out of its wonderful cast, leading to a satisfying finale and a whole bunch of punching to get there. An enjoyable watch where time just flew by.

Damn good 50's noir, executed well in every regard. The protagonist is sympathetic, as he has one shitty thing after another happen to him, which he solves, very satisfyingly, with his fists. The film doesn't have any major twists or revelations, but it's fast-paced, action-packed, well-edited (every single frame of the 82 minutes is meaningful), and logical throughout. There are weaknesses (Evelyn Keyes is lousy as the female lead), but overall, this is a top-notch crime drama.

Great dialogue makes for great noir.

Gritty, sharply written gem helmed by low-budget workhorse Phil Karlson. John Payne's down-trodden protagonist has our sympathy from minute one to fade out, making the detours in the constantly thrilling plot that much more exciting, and the un-noir-like ending gratifying and well-earned. The cast is refreshingly eclectic, distinctive, real, likable and memorable, as is the nuanced night-world atmosphere, which is another equally well-realized character.

I love the tightness of the script. I've never seen a screenplay with an ending that brings everything together so well, both thematically and plot-wise. Evelyn Keyes' loyal, remorseful female lead and Peggie Castle's untrustworthy, insouciant wife character have a contrast that makes the ending work uncannily well. Most of all, John Payne feels like a living, breathing surfeit of pure rage on the screen, volatile and unpredictable.

A fairly standard, but well-paced noir. There are a couple of fantastic scenes, and a lot of fantastic beat downs.

The opening sets up the boxer angle well and it runs as an undercurrent throughout the film. It hinges largely on Payne's emotional ebbs and flows and he's certainly up to the task, running hot and cold throughout, with outbursts, introspection and a constant glint in his eye that tells you no matter where the film is at any given moment he's going to carry it through to the end. That reliance on emotion means that the powerful scenes don't fit together that well, but it's worth the tradeoff.

Phil Karlson-directed noir that gets better as it goes along, culminating in a terrific climax at a shadowy dockyard. Delicious performances from a rogue's gallery of character actors (Jay Adler, Jack Lambert, Brad Dexter) keep it lively while leading man John Payne (just six years removed from Miracle on 34th Street, but looking about 100 years older) plays an ex-boxer who engages is some of the worst fistfights I've ever seen in a movie.

This is one of my favorite low-budget 50's crime movies. Often listed as a "film noir" entry, this enjoyable crime/suspense movie isn't quite bleak enough to qualify by my definition. It is, however, very dark in places, which makes the overall story all the more satisfying. Good dialogue, clever plot, fine performances, unusual situations, exciting climax...all fit together very nicely indeed!

Phil Karlson again directs John Payne as a regular Joe getting framed, with a lot of punching along the way. I'm not quite sure how I feel about Evelyn Keyes. Sometimes she pulls off some good work, but there were also moments where she didn't seem that hot. Speaking of "hot", the movie gets pretty damn sexy. Nothing like you'd see today, of course, but quite suggestive for 1953. A really solid film that rolls along beautifully.
