Solid if unspectacular. While it's very familiar, there is a lot to like in how the characters are portrayed and how they deal with various emotional traumas. Some of it is spread relatively thin or dropped altogether, which hurts it somewhat...too many balls in the air...but the performances are endearing without being saccharine or manipulative. Very good. Very watchable.

Although it is apparent that the movie has to conform to 'acceptable' standards, A Brilliant Young Mind is very heart-warming and emotional. There are many flaws to mention, but it felt very interesting and captivating to watch. So I'd say 70/100.

This film was all about the critics and nothing about us.( audience). It is to entitled to apeal and frankly none of it is likeable. Only decent thing is acting by some of the cast

Some of the script makes little sense to me but it has some great moments. In particular, a very moving attempt to explain love in mathematical terms that comes near the end of the film.

It feels like there are several real characters here, even if we only get glimpses of some of them.

X+Y is a surprisingly engaging film about an autistic teen and his punt at the Maths Olympiad. The film manages to accurately capture the eclectic mix teen prodigies thanks to some brilliant performances. Butterfield is great, as is Davies (Luke) whose swansong was probably my favourite two scenes of the film despite being a cringeworthily familiar character. Hawkins, Marsan & Spall keep it grounded. A little clichéd in parts (dead dad, chasing after the girl) but honest enough to be endearing.

Hollywood almost always portraws people on the Autistic spectrum as freaks even when it pretends to be respecting them. This movie is different. It's intelligent - it shows this young autie as a human being with all of his strengths & disabilities. Real people - no cliches! Recommended.

I might enjoy this movie more than others just because I'm familiar with the setting which is based upon real life TST and IMO contests. UKMT shirts abound. Was nice seeing two HFA characters not being pigeonholed into certain characteristics, but rather acting very differently from each other. Ending probably isn't very realistic, but it at least had an ending, unlike so many other movies I've seen lately.

Didn't convince me - I don't believe it was an accurate portrayal of what these kinds of kids are really like.

Math's!!! The most annoying word of the movie. I hate how the Brits add an S to math.

A very poignant and also well-acted drama. All the teary moments come from the accidental death of the boy's father and his emotional distance from his mother, but the portrayal of a (high-functioning) autistic person by Butterfield is practically spot-on. The maths team antics and romance subplot are a bit lighter and more hackneyed, although some interesting themes are explored. Altogether, the mixture of different strands and subplots makes an almost perfect film of emotion, truth and beauty.

A sweet, sentimental film about an autistic maths prodigy that avoids treacly cliche thanks largely to some truly heartfelt performances - Asa Butterfield, Sally Hawkins, Rafe Spall and Eddie Marsan all acquit themselves marvellously. The characters feel lived-in and genuine, and the story - while largely conforming to the template laid down by inspirational movies of years past - is thoughtful and heart-wrenching.
