There's a few clever shots, but honestly just wasted potential to have Cassavetes do a film on this subject and not have it be cinéma vérité. I feel like this is one you appreciate more if you have a better understanding of Cassavetes's style in his prime.

Dated, ungainly mish-mash of Cassavetes minimalism and mawkish Kramer "message" pic does at least have fine performances from Rowlands (briefly) and Garland (though efforts to "de-glamorise" her come off as brutal rather than realistic), with Lancaster laughably wooden as a stern doctor. If either Cassavetes (preferably) or Kramer could have taken the wheel proper, a genuinely moving film could have emerged from this material, but as it stands it feels awkwardly pulled in all directions.

Wow, John Cassavetes directing Judy Garland! Except it's horrible. Keep your eye out for mid-life Lawrence Tierney as a concerned parent.

Cassavetes proving he was capable of excelling while playing ball in the studio system if he wanted to... but he didn't want to, and we love that for him

Judy Garland seemed confused thru-out, but in spite of her acting, I enjoyed the movie. It's very dated, and that causes it to feel muddled and a little hard to watch.
