Feels like it holds something back, content to center itself around bits of absurdity and end with a recurring gag rather than delve deeper into the lead character. With those caveats, it is still nice little quirky dramedy and does explore the lead and his young adulthood crisis enough to be meaningful.

Whilst it may seem to add another 20 something slackerism to an ever growing pile, A Coffee in Berlin deftly manages to incorporate serious themes which, at times, poetically convey the reverberations of a past which haunts an entire nation. Gerster's debut is stylish, assured and (for the most part) successful in its unashamed fusion of Woody Allen and Jim Jarmusch.

I'm not good at saying positive things. I prefer not to lie. But once it a while you come across something unexpected (read: good). Open-jaw-smile-look-left-right-'didya-fuckin-see-it?' kind of speechlessness. But speechless seems to be intended for when you get sloppy around people and listen to opinions. Aaaand it's just the fucking stupidest thing you ever heard. Shuts you right up. All I'm saying - this film is bees knees. Early Jarmusch, Nouvelle Vague, hip but smart, etc.

Beautifully shot bit of navel-gazing hipster fluff, replete with blatant Nouvelle Vague affectations, although beneath it all it's really closer to crowd-pleasing American festival bait, alternating between a parade of overly-quirky characters and situations (see early Linklater) and somewhat awkward, strained attempts at moody "soulfulness" (thankfully tasteful jazz in place of some try-hard indie pop soundtrack). Still, all and all, much better than when Americans try this sort of thing.

This is what we have now: a shell of past bohemias, forever emptied of their relevance.
