The clunky political commentary of Monsieur and King is thankfully absent, but in its place we have a curiously unambitious romantic comedy that plays like an extended sitcom. Loren is feisty and tremendously sexy as a Countess with largely ambiguous motives, and Brando is OK in an atypical role that doesn't really play to his stengths. They have some funny scenes together, at least until their encounters get bogged down in repetition, and its breezy tone makes it easy to watch.

Unlike Chaplin at his prime, the humour in this one seems desperately outdated and lazy. In the absence of other merits, despite the presence of Brando and Loren, A Countess from Hong Kong is instantly forgettable as a film.
