It seemed to me this was trying to be different, and while it succeeded in this aspect, it failed in almost every other way.

It looks good, it sounds great, but I can't help get the feeling that you need to know the story already to appreciate what is happening.

While Yamamura has a unique visual style this Kafka adaptation sounds gibberish compared to Atama Yama.

too much symbolic and too much Kafka...

Interesting style, but that's all... the rest is too much Kafka for my taste.

Remarkable expressionistic and surreal imagery that distorts space and suits the material.

Definitely surreal. Now I should read the book to find out how I missed what I missed of the story in this well animated, obscure short-film.

I've never read the original, but the story and imagery certainly fit what I'd expect from Kafka. Great piece of animated surrealism.

While I really enjoy the design, and can acknowledge the narrative and distortion suits Kafka well, I can't actually like it.

it required a quick look at the synopsis on wikipedia, but the animation is truly extraordinary.

There are some nightmares which don't scare you to the point where you immediately wake up but which hold your interest and hope alive at that scary structrue. I think the short story and the film both are based on such an idea: you know you are in a grausome nightmare but somehow you have to hope that it will end up well.

Never quite able to hit the right, Kafkaesque tone, which would seem to a large degree what a short should at a minimum convey. Still, it comes close, but might not if you jump in it without having read anything about Kafka or a synopsis of this tale beforehand.

Okay, this is creepy, why is it so creepy? The story itself isn't creepy but the director turned Kafka into Poe.
