Essentially a Cold War thriller, it is the story of a Russian counter-espionage agent, known as Eberlin to his employers in British Intelligence, where he is working undercover for Moscow as a double agent. His superiors in Britain instruct him to find and assassinate a KGB agent named Krasnevin, believed to have killed a number of British agents.

I thought this was a lot better than its reputation. It's a pretty bleak film with nice location work in West Berlin and London. Closer to Spy Who Came in from the Cold than Bond films. Laurence Harvey is great as the protagonist, a Russian double agent who is sent to Berlin to assassinate himself. Harvey also took the directing duties after Mann died. Score by Quincy Jones.

The protagonist in "A Dandy in Aspic" is also the bad guy. He is a double agent fixed in two worlds asked to kill himself. The film is dark set in a split Berlin before the wall came down. My problem with the film is there is not one likable character.

Those opening credits are so 2020. I loved this movie. It's flawed to be sure but there's a great sense of place and it takes its time and doesn't bludgeon the viewer with the plot and the pace. All my favorite films let me in and give me a chance to explore a bit for myself - A Dandy in Aspic does that well.
