In this short, Chaplin beats police officers, steals from regular workin' men, runs around in the middle of the street like a spaz and brings animals into establishments clearly not meant for them. He's a bit of an anarchist, isn't he? All in all, this short is cute but the gags aren't that memorable or hilarious. Or maybe it's just that I'm more of a cat person.

Chaplin is pretty funny, most of the gags are entertaining and that dog is damn cute. Not the most perfect silent comedy but the few rough spots are outweighed by some really brilliant parts.

Over rated, as with the majority of Chaplin's stuff, and of course the majority think it's awesome because "look, the guy walks funny and has a funny mustache." which worked in 1918, but doesn't work 90 years later. I wont deny that Chaplin does have some great gags, but they're not in this.

Probably the most famous short of Chaplin. Simple and captivating.

Feels more like a patchwork of generic Chaplin gags than anything. That said, even generic Chaplin gags are pretty darn fantastic. Kinda wish there'd been more dog.

Good for the time but when compared to the rest of Chaplin's later works it leaves the viewer wanting. The story is nice but unmemorable. A few decent gags but nothing extraordinary.

Cuter than your average Chaplin, though also a bit less humorous.

I didn't find this funny. The great thing about Chaplin is that when it's not funny, it's moving. I didn't find this moving either. Using animals... it's cheap and uninspired.

This one was just okay for me. A couple of kind of funny moments, but the story's pretty uninspiring. There are dogs in it, though, as the title would suggest, so that's a plus. It's a short, so it doesn't drag on too long.

Old hat, really, just like Chaplin's oeuvre in general. Pretty stupid and dull, but I'll grant it a few points because it's actually funny occasionally, I must admit, and it has a sweet ending

The first film shot at Chaplin Studios doesn't feel too different than a lot of what Chaplin had been doing at Mutual for the last couple years. Still, it's all amusing and solidly done, and the dog is cute.

Maybe I'm a nostalgic weirdo, but I laughed tears during this movie. The slapstick comedy worked very fine for me, as did the general flow of the movie. Plus, I found it interesting and touching to watch it as a historic piece of film that portraits the everyday life and the society about 100 years in the past. And obviously the dog rules.

There's some really funny scenes here which kept things fun and interesting even when things got a little repetitive.

Good old days before the Charles went mawkish on everybody.

Entertaining gags, but, as per usual with Chaplin, many of the funniest highlights in this derive from his facial expressions and comic timing.

Now that's what I call a happy ending! Some great scenes, including Charlie stealing back the money from the two crooks as he knocks them out at the bar table. The dogs attacking Scraps is pretty brutal. Have to say the music for me was annoyingly distracting (I watched the version available on NYX Channel).

In many ways, this feels like a rehearsal for The Kid. Charlie's theft at the bar table is the gag highlight.

Quite a funny short, with lots of memorable, inventive bits and gags including some very well made scenes with dogs, but also an emotionally engaging one that will have you rooting for our hero in no time.

Vida de cachorro estreava há 105 anos nos EUA. Eu gosto mais dos finais melancólicos do Chaplin, ele não combina com final feliz porque a vida não tem final feliz. Coleção Folha Charles Chaplin.
