In some respects, a watershed film - there is an overall sensitivity to the theme that lends the story a much-needed maturity (and sensitivity especially to Daniela Vega, who may have one of this year's best performances. The camera loves her face like all classical films should). Yet the film falls into caricature in just the wrong moments, and never quite knows how to tackle its magical realism. Recommended - a film just on the verge of greatness.

It may be the least powerful movie of this year's foreign language category, yet it won. Still, it is not surprising knowing the whole political correctness inside the Hollywood in recent years. Daniela Vega's very strong performance is the only remarkable thing you will remember in this pretty cliché story.

A mesmerising central performance - the emotion is all in the eyes.

Vega's powerful and empathetic performance is the centerpiece and makes this a must-see; Lelio also creates some striking (if a little ostentatious) scene compositions. Flawed by its simplistic characterisation of the family of the deceased; there's a fair point to be made as to the ugly, vicious and all-too-credible way Vega is treated, but knowing nothing of the family outside of seeing them in the aftermath of tragedy muffles the point somewhat and comes off cruel to all parties.

As a social outcast who fights for her right to exist narrative this is better than expected. It's also completely unsurprising, inconsequential, and drawn-out, and has that soap flair that is apparently hard to get rid of with many Latin directors. Overall, a proud entry in the annals of identity politics filmmaking.

what could be a fantastic and empowering story turned out to be a dull and shallow movie. can't believe this one got an academy award. if you want to watch a truly powerful transgender movie, I strongly recommend Viva!.

While it is great to show a sensitive and nuanced portrayal of a trans woman played by (stunningly well no less) an actual trans woman, the plot and characterization left a lot to be desired. Also gosh she does love walking. Marina is always walking somewhere. Bet her calves were toned as shit when they finished filming.

Pretty much everything about this film was top notch, especially the cinematic way it conveys Marina's struggle in the face of stigmas and prejudices. This is why I can easily forgive the superficial and stereotypical way some characters are depicted, as this is Daniela Vega's film, and she carries it with such admirable aplomb.

A simple but touching movie about mundane discrimination.

A missed shot. Vega was great but the role had so much more potential. After the death of her partner it would have been interesting, if the film would have had let her explore her identity more instead of just encouter assholes who are nothing more than... well, assholes. Transphobia leads to severe consequences and while it is important to show the effects it can have on a person, it's also more complex but the film didn't explore it more than that.

Very slow quiet film but Vega's performance makes up for it.

I had been excited about this film, but was underwhelmed. It wasn't bad, by any means, and Daniela Vega's performance was good... but something about it just left me kind of ... "meh"

I loved how this showed all the various, smaller and bigger subtle and unsubtle meant and unmeant indignities and prejudices a transgender person faces

A character portrait of a trans woman grieving after the sudden loss of her partner and dealing with the countless indignities - both small and large - resulting from that. The lead actress has to carry the entire film, but fortunately she is very much up to the task.

Over-fucking-rated. Can't believe this movie won the Oscar over The Square.

A film that explores death as a trigger for malicious judgemental behaviour. Unfortunately, there simply isn't enough depth to any of the antagonists to truly make "A Fantastic Woman" powerful. Vega's performance was brilliantly restrained however, harnessing power within vulnerability with complete control.

A transgender woman trying to get her place in the world after the death of her boyfriend. There is only violence and intolerance around her, but she keeps things as simple as she can: wants Diabla, the dog she got from her boyfriend, and a live on her own. Walking and seeing herself in a walking mirror. Dancing in a night club like a flashmob. And then, in the end, truly, really singing. A rather conventional take for such a special character.
