A good court-room drama that raises questions about the sacrifice of innocents for a perceived greater good. I wouldn't call it ahead of it's time but it's certainly relevant today. Nicholson is fantastic, Cruise, Bacon and Moore are all also quite good in their supporting roles as well. It's not a stellar movie as it does bend military reality quite a bit but still worth seeing.

This is one that I feel that I like in spite of its flaws. The script is solid but can be a little too melodramatic and the point of the whole thing doesn't have a lot of weight behind it. It does hit all the right beats, the confrontation at the finale is worthy of note, and there are some decent performances to tie it all together.

As with most courtroom dramas, everything that happens outside the courtroom is a lot less interesting than the actual trial. With a film over 2 hours, it's felt. That said, this is really well written and there are some great performances - definitely worth the time spent.

Solid and compelling courtroom drama, no matter how you look at it. If you've been watching movies and tv shows since the 90's, you know Sorkin is a wordsmith when it comes to dialogue, using clever banter, deft turns of phrase, and carefully constructed exchanges that make every scene fascinating to watch, or should I say listen to. I'd argue that the emotional beats don't hit as hard as they should, despite the backstory added to some of the characters, but it's still well worth a watch.

Smart but simple adult filmmaking, the kind of terse and intelligent drama that was popular in the 90s but doesn't really get made anymore - at least, not with this amount of pathos and raw wit. Tom Cruise was probably never better (Magnolia excepted, maybe?), and Nicholson's seething performance gets more intimidating with every appearance. The dialogue is quick and wordy, but lacks the pretensions of Sorkin at his worst. A very easy film to enjoy.

A solid drama packed with strong performances. Even though the story is very basic and there is relatively little intrigue or suspense, the high notes are hit through Reiner's methodical, meticulous approach and faith in his actors. No need for flashy set pieces. Cruise's best performance, with solid support from Moore, Bacon, Nicholson and Walsh, make this film a workmanlike home run.

Sometimes a film can be defined by one scene or one spoken line. This is the case for A Few Good Men. And when a scene comes together like that, in my opinion it is the same as an evergreen, music-wise. Some people wish they would have written one of The Beatles' or Michael Jackson's hits, I wish that it was me who came up with the whole "truth" thing. Cause even though you haven't seen it people know it, quote it, and will do so for a long time. Oh, and it's a decent film as well...

A compelling courtroom drama that is kept mesmeric partly due to the glorious ensemble casting and Jack Nicholson, who as the enemy is relevant to the comments of human conscience and the questions of guilt, shame and contrition that follow the statements and logics the film contemplates and envisages. The direction is imposing and the rest of the actors outside of JN are sublime.

Memorable less for its overall plot and more for scene-to-scene moments and quotable lines, including of course "you can't handle the truth!", arguably the most quoted movie line of the 90s. Jack Nicholson dominates and Kiefer Sutherland is very good as well. The movie's climax is a little logically suspect (we'll get Jessep SO MAD he'll confess!), but it's still among the finest courtroom dramas.

The script for A Few Good Men is terrific. It's very smart and surprisingly funny. Unfortunately, Tom Cruise fails when it comes to making it seem as such. However, the film remains strong thanks to shining performances by Jack Nicholson, Demi Moore, Kevin Pollak, and much of the remainder of the cast. Cruise just overdoes his part, as usual, and this movie could have used some subtlety on his part. Regardless, A Few Good Men is a very memorable and captivating court drama. Really good!

Classic Hollywood. Constantly entertaining, ridiculous at times. Some cool but empty lines and dialogues. Colonel would never admit to the crime he committed. Kaffe and Galloway would never have risked their careers for an impossible case in the first place, even before colonel’s testimony. However, message conveyed is a good one, Tom Cruise is brilliant. After all, we watch Hollywood for entertainment and this movie provides that.

Here's "food" for thought: in that moment when Weinberg is deciding whether he's in or out and he asks whether Galloway has any Kung Pow Chicken... If she'd said, "no, I don't have any Kung Pow Chicken", Weinberg wouldn't have been there to pep talk Kaffee during his breaking point, Kaffee would have given up and no justice would have been served. Talk about airtight.

Cruise’s character is insufferable and the dialogue suffers from Sorkins usual American pathos. Some of the tropes might not have been as cliché when the movie was made but now casts a bit of ridicule of the entire thing. Also, Moore’s character has so little depth that even the dialogue makes fun of it at one point.

You wait quite a long time for the line, and have to wade through a lot of quite dry courtroom drama to get there. Early Sorkin writing lacks a bit of the polish you'd find later on in the West Wing, but has all the familiar tropes of walk-and-talks, characters reciting their CV, somebody talking about "doodie". For supposedly good lawyers, Cruise and Moore make a lot of rookie mistakes, and their courtroom demeaner is ridiculous. Meh, it's fine.

A bit flat for the most part, despite having Reiner and Sorkin attached. Cruise’s character is also fairly irritating for the first hour, who either gets better or I got used to. It does however have some great acting, and a classic scene that is actually better than expected, although the solution of the climax feels far too easy, and a bit of a cheat compared to most other courtroom dramas. The film is still recommendable for that scene alone.

This is a fairly well known movie. Everyone knows the famous line "You can't handle the truth." After being out 25 years there is plenty that could be criticized about it. However, that we still hear that line quoted 25 years later should give some indication of the quality of this movie. I can't help but admire Sorkin's finesse with dialogue and script structure, but beyond that, the film is swimming in self-satisfaction and drowning in sexism. Sorkin assigns motivation and character substance to women like they're lobsters--their only features are claws and mouthparts. Reiner makes a valiant effort to work around that constraint, but what could he do other than put the lobster in a navy uniform?

Totally solid and a bit better than I was expecting, mainly thanks to Sorkin's meaty screenplay that never wastes a word, even when it needs to reiterate points and raise red herrings (as it should for a courtroom drama). The relationship of the trio of Cruise, Moore, and Pollak enhances the case they're assigned to, and never detracts from it. My only complaint is that the denouement could've gone on for longer, which would've made it less of an easy ending and given Nicholson more screen-time.

I like a good courtroom drama, and this is one of the best. Tom Cruise and Demi Moore do some of the finest work of their careers (she in particular shows a subtle strength that she never got to display in, say, GHOST), and Jack Nicholson, in three scenes, is a grossly believable portrait of martial zeal who gives one of the greatest speeches in film history; Wolfgang Bodison is nearly as strong. Reiner's direction is artless as usual, relying on hacky montages, musical cues and trumped up emotional moments. And yet, I was somewhat entertained.
