Yael Hersonski's powerful documentary achieves a remarkable feat through its penetrating look at another film-the infamous Nazi-produced film about the Warsaw Ghetto. Discovered after the war, the unfinished work, with no soundtrack, quickly became a resource for historians seeking an authentic record, despite its elaborate propagandistic construction. The later discovery of a long-missing reel complicated earlier readings, showing the manipulations of camera crews in these "everyday" scenes.

The Ghetto film raises many question. Hersonski's documentary doesn't get very far in answering these questions, despite testimony, recollections and diaries. Perhaps the lack of written records makes it difficult to put together a narrative thread concerning this footage, but one wishes for more development of a central theme. Nonetheless, it's a haunting look at life for Jews in the ghetto at the depth of their misery, and a sober reminder of how easy it is to manipulate truth with a camera.

"Yael Hersonski is no less a shrewd manipulator than the German directors she set out to expose." - Andrew Schenker

A treatise on the paradoxical nature of film: intrinsically subjective and objective, a document at once unimpeachable and horrifically flawed. Yet, whatever the prejudices and intentions of the people manufacturing it, film can, even accidentally, retain an affective power: "I'm so happy I am human again and can cry."

Think what Hannah Arendt could have made of this footage? Typical of contemporary advocacy journalism, Hersonski doesn't know what to do with this outrageous material except show it.
