A Girl in Every Port

One of the best comedies of silent era. first half is brilliant, it could be a masterpiece if the second half was better. and a general comment: Buddy movies aren't gay. Friendship is everywhere, from Casablanca to BTFF or Rocky III. I'm tired of this crap.

Early silent from Hawks is interesting for historical purposes, but its "comedy" is pretty smarmy and labored, with reliable scenery chewer McLaglen dominating Armstrong; supposed "gay" subtext is a bit of a long bow to draw. No telltale sign of Hawks' future talent for directing snappy patter here!

It tries to tread the line between drama and comedy and excels at neither, though has good moments of both. The general story is fun enough, but there aren't any standout moments.

It starts as this naughty one man's adventure and slowly becomes a memorable, often hilarious and lovely buddy film, that starts when Spike bails his prison mate out just to punch him outisde the jail, but is forced to hang around with him -- arms and hands like a couple of lovers -- to avoid police attention. They get drunk together, have fun, but then this girl comes to spoil their friendship -- and she even seduces Spike's pal to sleep with her, but he refuses. Cute film.
