A Good Person

Garden State was one of the movies of my early 20s, don't know if it holds up today but i'm going to not disturb the grave to keep thinking of it like that. With a Good Person Braff establishes himself as a boomer, simple as that. This is not how drug use works, not at all, not even close. Everything about this movie is disingenuous and unreal, and it's just mind boggling to use so many cliches in 2023. The embarrassing confrontation scene at the party in the end plays like a mid 90s soap opera.

Florence Pugh almost single handedly saves this movie. Her performance is by far the best part. For some reason she looks really hot as a short haired strung out junkie, and she can sing surprisingly well. There's an occasional shot that makes you think Zach Braff might have some potential as a director, but for the most part the screenplay is just bad. I don't know if Morgan Freeman is phoning it in, or if the writing is just that hokey and heavy handed, but some scenes were rather cringey.

This is a middle of the road type film - there were some moments I thought were surprisingly poignant and worked well but there were moments I thought a bit too sentimental and perhaps a little predictable. It has quite a contemporary plotline, mainly focussing on the protagonist's painkiller addiction and its somewhat thought provoking. Its not bad, it tries to be pretty good but it didn't quite pull itself together fully. I liked the characters but they felt somewhat stereotyped ultimately

I enjoy Freeman like we all do, and I like the trope of "senior reflecting on life." I also apparently really like Pugh, who is just a powerhouse here, singing and emoting all over the place, garnering sympathy while being a junkie. I don't know if the emotional oomph of these two interacting, and the journey itself, just allows me to overlook apparent flaws in the script or if they aren't actually there, but I was invested. Maybe in time I will see them, but now is not then.

Excellent drama. Kudos to all involved especially Zach Braff.

The writing gets a little TV movie-y at times, but especially Pugh's acting takes this movie to another level. It's a good small budget movie that'll make you feel some things and think about some stuff.

Florence kicks the ass! Absolutely amazing performance.

Florence Pugh is worth watching in anything, and this is no exception, but overall it is a rather mediocre film (that really falls apart during its climactic dramatic confrontation).

Extra points for Florence Pugh. I personally detest movies about addiction, but this one was mostly quite bearable. Florence is always a treat. This movie is just OK, and has a pretty decent cast. Nothing I would ever want to watch a second time though.

Taking into account the exceptional acting but acknowledging the flaws in the script, "A Good Person" receives a 7 out of 10. The movie never becomes unwatchable, but it is a shame to see it settle for "good" when it had the potential to be "great."
