After years of no contact with his Uncle Henry, London banker and bond trader Max Skinner learns that Henry has died intestate, so Max inherits a château and vineyard in Provence. Normally I'm not a fan of family type dramas but I enjoyed this one a lot. Certainly not ground breaking by any means and for Ridley Scott it does feel like a bit of a feel-good-Hollywood but I can see still his great cinematography breaking through with shots of the vineyard and countryside. Crowe, as usual, is great. I say it's worth seeing.

I am poised to reject such an optimistic and idyllic viewpoint as presented in A Good Year, just as I resent the familiar romantic plot formula. Yet in coming form Ridley Scott, who normally tells stories of such patented cynicism, the formula feels refreshed and the passion shown for both the French countryside and the romanticized lifestyle feels genuine.

it's a rare example of how a decent film can be made out of a pretty weak screenplay.

This movie is riddled with bad cliches. Over worked business man has forgotten what it's like to stop and smell the roses. A piece of his childhood where some of his best memories took place, re enters his life. Lessons are remembered, life changes are made and love is found. Yawn.

How nice to see Russell Crowe act, great actor. Ridley Scott showing his versatility. A film enjoyable to watch, a beautiful place to see, good to attend, drinking a good wine.

Starts off badly, but creates a quirky, charming atmosphere as the film progresses thanks to Crowe's appealing performance, some funny moments and Le Sourd's cinematography. Although a bit formulaic, it's not a complete waste of time. Freddie Highmore will soon become an advertising whore like Macaulay Culkin. My crystal ball sees all...

A Good Year is about half of the way to becoming a good movie. If it only had a plot that we could follow along with, or perhaps if the characters actually did something, it might be worthwhile. As it stands, it's a character piece about a man needing redemption, and to improve himself, he's going to sit in a chair and drink wine all day. Not much more happens than that, and it's hard to recommend the film because of it. A Good Year isn't worth your time.

This is a fairly enjoyable watch - yes its very cheesy and predictable but sometimes that's no bad thing. I wouldn't say it's outright hilarious or constantly amusing but it does have what I'd call gentle comedy, with Russell Crowe being quite amusing at times, as the hapless 'fish out of water' Londoner in Provence. Watching him driving a small Smart car near the start of the film was really quite amusing! there aren't too many similarly funny scenes but there are some. If you can stand the che

A typical romantically bathetic but surprisingly decent drama, despite some obvious flaws and a reasonably weak script. The picturesque countryside makes for a nice environment, even though contrasts to the grey and dingy London feel blatantly exaggerated with the immoderate use of colour filtering effects. Crowe puts in a good leading performance and his character development feels plausible, even if occurring at a much accelerated pace. Accompanied by the usual thoroughly predictable ending.

I think Russell Crowe is great, but this film was a bit of a miss for me. I think the transition of Crowe's character was WAY too fast!! That, sadly, took down a lot of the movie. Was good, but could have been better.

Ridley Scott reunites with Russel Crowe for an work atypical of the pair's past efforts. Crowe plays a British businessman who must return to his Uncle's crumbling vineyard as his only living heir. The film tells the story of Crowe's past with his Uncle, played by Albert Finney, and his coming to terms with a life lived for happiness rather than dollars. A typical story executed well, A Good Year is definitely worth a viewing.

It seems really tempting so say good things about this one -- oh Marion, oh the vineyard, oh the cinematography, oh Abbie --, but the fact is that this is totally driven by familiar, irritating clichès, and the performances make sure you get them all right. What a lame picture you've shot, Sir Scott.

I quite enjoyed all of the women in this movie. In particular the housekeeper stands out as a lovely personality. Max played by Russell Crowe spends most of the movie being full of himself and almost too cocky to be likable. The ending is entirely too predictable. Some beautiful scenery and great production quality. A few important story points are handled rather poorly. Worth watching despite its flaws.

This is a film targeted directly at people who like this kind of film no matter how many times they have to endure it. It just goes to show that if you keep the production values high, cast a big name lead actor, and add an attractive love interest and you will have some success.

Not the most exciting or involving movie Ridley Scott has ever made---far from it---but the result is a refreshingly leisurely, though ultimately plain installment in his filmography, a jaunt rather than a roller coaster for once. Hell, he earned it.
