A Haunting in Venice

The least grandiose yet most precise of the Branagh Poirot series, it is not bogged down with much of the issues that plague Orient Express and Nile. Some of the most interesting cinematography and production design of the last decade, specifically the wide angle shots that set up the Palazzo in the first act.

I didn't sign up for a horror movie, but the suspense was built up masterfully so I can forgive the surprise. Sadly, the plot twists and the whodunit used tropes that have been used way too often recently in movies/tv (even as recently as The Afterparty S2). Can't blame Haunting for that, but it severely hindered my enjoyment. Wish we could have seen a bit more Venice and a bit less haunting. Had a good time in the theater nonetheless, the world needs more murder mysteries.

I really liked it, way more than the first two. The choice of camera angle and light works way better for this movie set in a dark and claustrophobic old house in Venice. Great acting and good ending. I liked it!

A few too many "suddenLOUDNOISE" jumps for my liking, but Branagh's work in front and behind the camera is more than good enough.

To me this is a significant step forward on several levels from the first Branagh/Poirot offering - namely, the performances of the ensemble cast, and Branagh's direction. There were several points here where the directing and visual flare felt rather inspired, and a revelatory performance from Jamie Dornan was just one among a litany of believable and enjoyable supporting showings. There's of course a formula here, but it's one that is able to produce an entertaining whole more often than not.
