Set on the high seas, this exciting and often hilarious adventure story concerns a group of children who are being sent to England by their parents, who are worried that their children are missing out on a civilized upbringing. But while floating across the ocean, a band of pirates hijacks the ship, spurring a sequence of outlandish events. Starring Anthony Quinn, Alexander Mackendrick's adaptation of Richard Hughes' novel is a rollicking affair. (Tower.com)

It really couldn't work as well as the book, so much of which is totally unfilmable, but the actors are so damn good and the pacing so breakneck that it's damn near as good.

Set design 10/10 & well acted but somehow just doesn't quite engage. Perhaps Quin & Coburn are usually such "good people" that you don't feel the children are in real peril - also the time & country that it it was made in seems, in the back of the mind, to preclude the possibility of a truly nasty movie & so takes away any edginess. "hilarious"? well, no. "Rollicking", no - it is in no way a swashbuckler. Watchable? Certainly, but for this viewer, there is an indefinable something missing here.
